I have a 1992 Mariner OB.I dont know much about outboards just enough to get them winterized and then get them going in the spring.I do know something about car engines. I tried to start it after de-winterizing. After turning the key it only hummed but woudlnt turn over so I replaced the battery. When I tried to restart it it was flooded-so I removed the plugs cleaned them off and it started right up. When I got it to the water it started and ran just fine for about 10 minutes then the constant alarm started going off.I didnt even know it had alarms. (Told you I didnt know about outboards.!! )Anyways I got where I was going shut it down and fished for a couple hrs and it started right up no problem. However after about 2 minutes the constant alarm started again. When I tried to power up the engine acted like it was going to die out but it would run on low throttle enough to get me to dock. There was a steady stream of water coming from the pee-hole so I thought that was fine.Any ideas what I should start checking?

Re: constant alarm sounding

I would start with the thermostat. If you never replaced the impeller you should also do this. Check water pump closely to make sure it is not pitted. Does this motor go in salt water or is it just fresh water.

Re: constant alarm sounding

The rason for it not throttling up any faster was because the heat sensor kicked in and shut down the engine speed because it was overheating. Hope you did not do any serious damage. If it is not the impeller, stats, then might be the poppet valve stuck open bypassing all the water from the block.

Re: constant alarm sounding

When you first started up the motor before going to the lake, you did hook up the ear muffs and garden hose to it, right?

Don't ever run an engine without water fed into the intakes... You will burn up an impeller in no time... It could be what your problem is...

Re: constant alarm sounding

We only use the boat in fresh water. After returning to the boat today we turned the key on and the alarm is on without the boat running, then it stays on when the motor starts. We didnt run it very long----less than 2 minutes just to see if the water was flowing through the motor and it appeared to be ok. Didnt run it very long because the alarm was loud and I didnt want to chance any further damage. However, after thinking about it I do remember that when I changed over to the new battery and started it with the water running, I changed back to the original battery just to make sure it wouldnt work ----when it didnt ,I turned the water off and went back to the new battery and I did start it and it ran for about 5 seconds without the water supply turned on. Is that all the longer it would take to ruin something? Also------can you guys tell me where I can get a manual for a 1992 40hp ELO Mariner ID#6E9-L-450354 ?

Re: constant alarm sounding

I looked at the manuals types on this site but was wondering how to get the manual for this particular motor.

Try Mercury Parts Express (on-line) for the OEM shop manual and parts list.

Re: constant alarm sounding

I have the same problem, after starting the motor turn the key very slowly towards the off position without shutting off the engine until the alarm sound stops. The key hole must be damaged like mine.

Re: constant alarm sounding

Are the alarms on the motor or are they by the ignition switch area? This sound is def. coming from the control area by the steering wheel. Is it possible that I ruined the impellar from running it for about 5 seconds without the water supply turned on? I was sort of hoping that the motor might have sucked the water that was still in the hose even though it wasnt turned on. Told you all I didnt know much about these motors.

Re: constant alarm sounding

I Have the same engine and the same problem, with the alarm sound from the same place! Since wather is running well out from the cooling sistem and the ail tank is full, I don't know what's wrong. If kept slow, it continues to run for long. Coult it be related to the valvoline level ?

Re: constant alarm sounding

Check temp switch located by number 1 cylinder spark plug and make sure it hasn't gone short circuit, if you are getting a constant alarm without motor even running this is favourite..

Re: constant alarm sounding

the alarm is for two reasons. 1. overheat. 2. oil, if you have some sort of oil injection. Check both.

Re: constant alarm sounding

Hey, I also seem to have a similar problem. Sometimes I can start without beep returning, sometimes beep is continuous when key turned on but motor not yet running. Beep can be loud, but also very soft and sounding like the internet modem connection. When running the motor, there is water coming from the control outlet (anyway: how warm may this water be, does anyone know?). On the water, at a certain speed, the beep can be gone and return 10 minutes later. Oil tank is full.

This weekend we thought we found it; it seemed to be the problem of the key/ignition. The beep sometimes reacts on moving the key up and down. But we are not quite sure about it.
Did anyone of you think of the ignition key(wiring) as being the problem?

Thanks.

Re: constant alarm sounding

halfpint,

By the sound of it you should start looking for a chafted wire in the harness or control box. The sensors 'ground' the wire to fire the alarm. If you've lifted the wire off the sensors and you're still getting an alarm, then the wire must be grounded elsewhere.

JDH, If the wire in the control box is touching the keyswitch or the keyswitch is pushing it onto the metal casing you could have found your problem.

The siren is located in the control box. When the key is turned to the "ON" position 12 volts is applied to one side of the siren. The other side is the wire that runs to the engine sensors. When one of the sensors goes 'ground', it completes the circuit and current flows through the siren and mades that god-awful noise.

Chris............

Re: constant alarm sounding

Hello Chris,

Thanks for your reply on our problem. The dealer that is servicing our motor says not to worry about the beep as long as the oiltank is filled and the coolwater control outlet gives the control flow. Disconnecting the beeper should be no problem; the only thing we would have to do is to keep an eye on the oil level and the coolwater control flow.

Do you (or anyone else) agree?

Re: constant alarm sounding

Don't disconnect the beeper! Find out why its going off. If its a beep beep beep its the oil, if its beeeeeep its heat. My oil alarm went off even when the boat wasnt running. I found my pump shaft was striping out the internal gear and not pumping at the right ratio. I went to pre-mix then disconnected the oil beeper. The heat beeper still works. Just my two cents. Good luck and let us know.
CU

--------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!
