Don, u mentioned putting in a pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft..wouldnt the 5.7 gsi engine have one in it anyway? then just reuse my old invaders flex plate and install the flywheel housing? or will i need to head to napa, pick up a pilot bearing and then bolt it up?

May have a problem here, what is the flywheel diameter of the AQ271 engine?

I think he had a AQ271 originally Don. Would be nice if it was mentioned in this thread.

What's the matter, haven't you got these details memorized!!;)

Re: Converting from carb to efi..invader 204

Yeah, I knew it was the 271C, I just typed 211, not sure where that came from.
When this thread started, and he said he had the DP-A, I was thinking the engines using that drive all had the single bearing primary shaft. After looking at the 271 parts, it doesn't....................

Ya, so not pilot bearing to deal with. You've been dishing out so much info lately, I'm having trouble absorbing it all.

Thanks again for the edjumacation.:)

Not sure till the OP posts his flywheel diameter.

Re: Converting from carb to efi..invader 204

ok thiere is the obvious difference in flywheel diameter, Don- you said i need the single bearing primary shaft unit.. that will fit the 14" flywheel and the starter? also i need clarification on if i need a pilot bearing installed? there isnt one there now. Will i need a new flex plate for the 14" flywheel?

Re: Converting from carb to efi..invader 204

Can you take a pic of the driveshaft on the engine side of the flywheel cover? If it shrinks down to a smaller diameter on the tip, it goes into a pilot bearing, if it stays about the same diameter to the end, on the inboard side, it doesn't have a pilot bearing and you would need a two bearing flywheel cover.

Re: Converting from carb to efi..invader 204

The housing is just like u stated.. It stays the same diameter on the inboard side.. I believe don is correct because the two bearing style fits a 13" flywheel and now my mew engine has a 14" flywheel.

Re: Converting from carb to efi..invader 204

found a sloution to my flywheel housing problem today! i was thininking that maybe my od starter off the AQ271 was offset different...sure enough it was now the flywheel housing that i have fits perfect with my 13" flywheel, flex plate and old starter! here are some pics for reference.. much cheaper and easier than finding another cover

for some reason the other pic isnt uploading..but it shows the starter for the 14" flywheel and how different the offset of the gear is

Yes, naturally the starter would be different with two different flywheels. This may be you biggest problem. I believe you could swap flywheels, but your block is made for the other starter. If there was an easier solution, I think Don would have mentioned it.

Sorry I'm just not positive on this.

Re: Converting from carb to efi..invader 204

As the engine sits right now it fits perfectly, the starter is properly shimmed to the flywheel, the flywheel and flexplate are bolted up and the cover is on with no obstructions, these blocks have mounting positions for both style starters. The setup im using now uses the two forward mounting bolts, the starter i took off used the kind of offset mounting holes. So what im saying is the block has provisions for both.
