to make a long story short, i had a knock coming from one cylinder on my 2000 115hp yamaha. did a compression test, test came back at 3 cylinders had 120 and one had 40. took the heads off and noticed the piston was damaged as well as the cylinder wall. so my question is roughley how many shop hours should it take to replace 1 piston, rings and bore the cylinder wall 20 over. I just got an outragous estimate from a tech at 2900.00 for this job, witch sounds way to much. to break it down parts would be about 225.00 and labor would be 2700.00, or he could rebuild all 4 for 3300.00 Any responses would be much appreciated.

12-16 hours, maybe more. Then there's boring and honing (usually done by a separate machine shop), a new water pump, fixing what caused the piston to fail in the first place (pistons don't just go south for no reason, possibly rebuilding all carbs which is additional labor). Few shops overhaul anymore. Most install remanufactured powerheads. The price quoted is probably reasonably within the ballpark.

I rebuilt 4 of my cylinders for about $500 but you will have to do it yourself though. I have a 1980 115hp Johnson. Buy a piston(no more than a $100) and a honer(like $20 or so) and do it yourself. Hone out the wall till its smooth to your fingers and reassemble. Its not "professional" but it worked for me. And I redone all 4. I get a compression of 120, 120, 115, and 125. So, it worked and I am happy. Also, yes, get a new water pump Hope this was helpful.. I'm new at this and by water pump its like a propeller in the lower unit.

It sounds more like a bore job if compression is down to 40, I think it is a bit more then a glaze breaker is going to do.

A decent shop can tend to the machine work for you, if a glaze breaker won't clean it up. It would be a really good idea to eliminate what scorched your piston in the 1st place. Are you ready to do a rebuild yourself? If so,you should invest in a good repair manual for your motor to get an idea of what's involved. Or read the nightmare that another guy is facing after having a so-called shop rebuild his. That thread starts with Motor lock-up @4000 rpm. Good luck. KR

Like rebuilt said "invest in a good manual". If you feel you are able to tear down the powerhead yourself you will save a ton of money. You"ll probably have to take the block to have it bored or have a new sleeve put in. Or you may want to look around for another powerhead. If you do decide to do the work yourself go ahead and rering the other pistons while your in there.
If you run into any problems there are alot of experts hear @ iboats that can guide you through the rebuild.

Please remember what WillyBWright said, "fix what caused the piston to fail in the first place (pistons don't just go south for no reason) Otherwise you'll be back in the same position in the near future.
