I am disassembling the CR lower unit on one of my 1988 Evinrude 225's to replace the seals and inspect the internal parts.

I do not have the special tool to thread onto the prop shaft that attaches to the slide hammer to remove the prop shaft and carrier. Anything commonly available that will work?

I also do not have the special puller that clamps to the driveshaft to pull it out. Any easy way to get that out using commonly available item?

If all else fails I can probably fabricate something that will work, but I hate to spend all day making a tool to do a ten minute job.

OK. I was able to get the prop shaft and bearing carrier assembly out using a heat gun to warm up the the housing, a grade 8 nut on the prop shaft and the largest slide hammer with three jaw puller that Harbor Freight had on the shelf. I had to hold the three jaws in place on the back side of the nut with one hand and work the slide hammer with the other. Another set of hands would have made the job easier, but I got the job done.

I'm considering leaving the drive shaft in place. I don't need to remove that to reseal the lower unit and other than having some water in the lower unit, I wasn't having any problems. Nothing appears to be damaged and I don't want to create a problem where there was none. I was using the synthetic gear lube (the green stuff) so it seems to have done its job despite the water. When I drained the lower unit, the lube looked like white paint.

I'm into it for about $50 for the slide hammer kit and nut plus whatever the seal kit cost.

When you get it all back together, have it pressure and vacuumed checked for any leaks.

I plan on doing that. I have a MityVac hand pump that will do pressure and vacuum and I cobbled up some fittings to adapt it to the lower unit. I used it when I replaced the gears in the standard rotation lower unit a couple years back. It's not pretty, but it works.

Does your manual have any specs on what pressure and vacuum to check it at??

Yes . 16-18 PSI pressure and 15 inches of mercury vacuum final check, after testing for leaks at lower settings. I have a combination pressure and vacuum gauge in line.

That's correct. Be sure to rotate the drive shaft and prop shaft over when doing this test. Also move the shift rod through it's full pattern.
