Re: Cylinder Heads

I believe a remanufactured head would have all new valves, springs, guides ... as where a rebuilt head may not. Just my thought on the subject.

Re: Cylinder Heads

I agree OMC. I had a vortec head "rebuilt", and they used some valves from my other head.

Re: Cylinder Heads

I don't agree. Rebuilding is what you guys are stating, but remanufacturing is the same thing on a more assembly line and quality controlled type process.

For example: a Caterpillar dealer mechanic can rebuild a cylinder head in a shop or he could install a remnufactured cylinder head built at a plant designed for remanufacturing. In either case you could see a combination of new and re-used parts depending on how they looked at inspection. In the case of a reman you would probably get reused valves from a big bin and in the rebuild they would be yours if they were reused. My .02 . . .

Re: Cylinder Heads

Thanks guys, that is pretty much what I have been led to believe.

So if an OHC head was rebuilt, it problably had the existing valves ground, new seals, valve springs checked for tolerances, and replaced with new parts or other used parts.

Then if it was remanufactured, It would have been completely gone through such as the cam journals line bored, new valve guides/seats, new valves/springs and seals.

So is the extra price for a reman worth paying for over the rebuilt?

Re: Cylinder Heads

Ahhhh, stupid me, I forgot to mention about the head bolts. The ones I took out (dodge 3.5 twin cam) looks in great shape. Is it really necessary to put in new ones? I have them pushed into a cardboard box in the order in which they came out.

Re: Cylinder Heads

Yes it is necessary to replace them. They are touque to yeild bolts and are designed to streach. Reusing them can/will result in broken bolts or insufficent torqe.

SS, regarding those bolts, do a search in the Mercruiser section, they have been discussed several times.
