That sounds just fine... And as long as you have access to the tools and equipment to remove the engine and strip it down, we help you step by step...

ALSO if your going to attempt to rebuild your engine and your stuck on something something seized or doesn't make sense Stop take loads of pics upload and ask ask ask. could be the difference between a successful relatively cheap rebuild and costing yourself more time and money. In my trade ive seen so many times someone try and fix something and not know what it is there doing mess it up and bring it to me to repair and cost them alot more money.this is just my own opinion. With the help of this awesome group of guys on here you wont have an issue. motor rebuilding is an art a very precise art but is doable

ill be taggin along if its cool this is a good tread best of luck

Bigdog.....Is the boat you are working on the same one in your avitar pic?

If so then renting a regular engine hoist is not going to work......Many guy's on here have built their own hoist out of wood to pull engines from a big boat like that. Do some Searching to get some ideas.

Good luck and hope your comp numbers fare better the second time around.

Yup, you can make a gantry, or if you have a really high garage you might be able to put a chainfall there. But whatever you do. I'd recommend getting something you can use repeatedly. If you pay a tow truck to remove & reinstall it 2 or three times you'll have spent what it would cost to build your own removal system.
By the way you want to be able to support 1000 lbs, because your motor probably weighs 700 lbs bare, 850 or 900 "dressed".

Yea my engine weighs 970lbs dressed. Ok I will look into making one. But as far as tools go, do i have all of them to get the job done?

Alright i will look at making my own hoist. Dont know how worthy it would be to life a 970lbs engine with wood but does not hurt to try. Thanks And yes that is the boat in the picture!

Just a few pics to summon up the idea of how big the boat is and my working conditions. As you can see all the work is being done in my yard outside the house in the - temperatures in NewYork so i would have to say not the best working conditions!

With boat on blocks you would have to work on the motor inside the boat. I see no way pulling the motor out with home made lift unless you have a gantry on wheels. I keep a boat on trailer until I lift the motor, then pull the boat and bring a motor down.
What part of the city is that ramp in? I'd love to see how they pulled this rig on the streets.

This is Far Rockaway in Queens NY. There is a public boat ramp in between a high school and a sanitation department. Is it possible to rebuild the motor inside of the boat?

Didn't know there is a ramp hidden in between those buildings.
I'd take the heads off first and start from there. Pulling short block out of the boat is much more easy job. Still will need to figure something out though. Make sure you tag everything and take pictures before taking it apart.

You are most likely going to need some machining work to be done on the engine block, so you would need to finds a way of getting that down out of the boat. You'll also need to invert the engine to work on the bottom end (crankshaft bearings and oil pan area), so if you can get an engine stand up there....

I'd look at finding a way to get the complete engine out. Also makes it easier to test run the engine before you re-install....

Yes, ideally the whole thing would have to come out. Takes half hour to disconnect everything.
You may want to hire a wrecker and see if they can reach with the boom.

Yea its there. But its a terrible ramp! But would would a person see for a public ramp. Actually i got a buddy who has a fork lift and he said he can get the whole entire engine out. All i have to do is disconnect everything and get ready to get the engine out. Do you think a fork lift would do it? He said the capacity on the lift was 11000lb so its more then enough for that one 970lb engine. And he said that i would need to make a engine crate so i can put the block inside because i am going to be sending it out to Canada to be machined.Should get the block back before Christmas if i send out the engine this week.

Yea my friend is going to come with his fork lift to get it out. I am going to send my block to a machine shop in Canada and get it machined there.

I had a motor pulled once with a fork lift at a marina, but those machines are different. They have long blades and high lift. Hopefully your friend's machine will be able to do the job. Weight capacity is not going to be an issue for any fork lift.
Why Canada?

He said that he had pulled engines out before with that fork lift. And the machine shop in CANADA gave me the best price and they are top rated machine shop in the world! They will send it out to me with the cylinders installed and new can shaft and bearings installed. So there will be little work left for me to do!
