ok, new to this forum but looking for help. Out today on my old pontoon, pulled up to a dock to drop off a passenger, shifted in "R" and went about 2 ft and engine died. Would not restart, let me be clear, the starter would not engage completly dead. Threw out the anchor and was able to get back to the dock. Started trouble shooting: turning key gets me nothing, no starter and I normally get a short buzzer when the key is turned, nothing. Here is another finding, tilt/trim will not work. The Tach is frozen on 1200rpm, that about where it was when the engine quit. Checked all electrical conections all good, checked all fuses all good. I have power to all lights, radio, horn etc. Shift unit is OMC and engine is a 70hp Evinrude. Double check the kill switch, lanyard is attached, seems ok. Any help on where to look would be great. Thanks knightflyer

Re: Dead in water

there's a 20amp fuse in an inline fuse holder on a red wire running from the solenoid to the big red main wiring harness plug on the port side of the engine.

it carries power to the keyswitch, so when it blows, you get no starter, no choke & no tachometer, but the accessories work cause they're not powered through the keyswitch.

welcome to iboats!

I'll double/triple check it but I don't think it's blown and in fact replaced it with a new fuse just to be sure. had wished it was that simple. thanks steve
i just found the fuse you guys were talking about, I had been checking the inline fuse at the battery post NOT on the engine, yes it was blown headed to the part store now. THANKS A MILLION. Steve

Sounds like the fuse was his problem, but does the T-n-T go through the key switch fused line as well?

Mine doesn't, but I'm allowing for the possibility that this one does. Might even be a prior owner's DIY "undocumented enhancement" -- stranger things have happened. No doubt we'll find out soon enough............
