Re: Decarb?

decarb means to put an additive in the fuel that will loosen carbon deposits from around the rings and from the top of the piston.Yamaha's Ring Free is one of the better ones. :D

Re: Decarb?

About decarbing....

When should I decarb? At the end of the summer before storing it for the winter?

Is "fogging the engine" the same thing?

*confused* ;)

/Tommy

Re: Decarb?

you should decarb your engine ever year or so...

depends on how much you use your rig..

Its not the same as fogging..

Decarb is to remove built up carbon from the combustion chamber and pistons/rings etc...

Fogging is a preservation measure to protect the engine before periods of inactivity..

I imagine many people decarb before fogging, but I wouldnt' know since there is no real need for fogging here as we can boat all year round. :)

regards

Franki

Re: Decarb?

yamaha recommends constant use with each tank of fuel.this will eliminate current deposits and help prevent future build-up.fogging an engine is an entirely different procedure of "oiling down"the internal engine components for periods of storage ;)

Re: Decarb?

Hi Tommy. Not much to add to the good advice they gave you, but if you do a lot of idle operation, decarbon frequently. If you are allways wide open throttle, you would normally never need to decarbon. But the average boater needs to do this every 80hours or so.
Idling allows carbon to build up in the engine, under the ring lands and inside all the ports.

Re: Decarb?

Hi 12Footer,

Ok, that's quite logical when you say it. I'm only idling when getting the engine warm then I have wide open trottle. :D

I'm not trolling either so decarbing may not be an issue for me.....yet...

/Tommy

Re: Decarb?

Adding a decarb gas additive is preventative maintenance.

Decarbing the already accumulated buildup, is a little different. Involves spraying product into carbs while running, removing plugs and spraying into cylinders, letting it soak. Then running engine to blow out the loosened carbon buildup.

If you search this site for decarb, you will find others' advice.

Re: Decarb?

Hi,

Well, I have ordered an new Merc 90 -03 and your advice is to use this additive from the beginning(always)? I will start to use the engine when the ice disappears from our lakes up here in northern Europe. ;)

/Tommy

Re: Decarb?

tommy-you got it ! start using a decarb product AFTER your ten hour break in period(during which you'll probably be running double oil if it's a two stroke carburetted model)-your local dealer should be able to provide advise and product.
