That's a tough deal, BWR1953. Unfortunately, it's a part of hunting, just not the good part. I'm pleased to hear the effort you're putting forth to find it. Too many "hunters" wouldn't even look for it if it didn't drop in it's tracks, or, would give a minimal effort in locating it. You've gone all out and should be satisifed you did the best you could. Doesn't matter if it's a huge buck or a small doe, it still doesn't feel very good if they're not recovered.

Sounds like you have the right idea by going back out and looking again. Hope you find it, but keep in mind, there is only so much you can do.

I helped a couple of buddies chase wounded deer in the same year. The one, we were out after dark for hours trailing it thru the woods in snow and -20deg. Caught up to it a couple of times, but were never able to get it.

The other, we let lay over night and still chased it for 3 hours the next morning. Couldn't believe it was able to get back up. We ended up getting that one.

as foamy as that blood looks, i would guess you hit a lung. could be a good or a bad thing. I have seen elk and deer go a long ways with a poorly hit lung. what are ya shooting with?

A wise old man once told me, work a grid pattern when looking for the animal, they hide pretty well and could be layed up under a log or bush and you could walk right by without seeing it.

Yeah, we figured it was a lung shot too. We worked the area pretty hard, but it IS Florida swamp. With two dogs in the picture and on the trail, plus 5 guys, we were pretty thorough.

I'm shooting a Marlin 336 lever-action .30-30 with Hornady LeveRevolution ammo, 160gr. ballistic tip at 2400 fps. This ammo downed 3 pigs in 3 shots for me back in September. I double checked the zero on the Bushnell 3-9x scope last week at the range. All is good.

Thanks. I honestly still feel bad about it this morning. It'll take time for the gloom to clear. Sounds like you can relate.

I'm not hunting today... my 22 y.o. daughter is flying down from Philly for the holiday. I'll pick her up this morning and visit until Sunday when she returns.

I'm planning on going hunting early Thanksgiving morning and taking her along. That'll be interesting.

Okay, I got the video of the doe downsized and uploaded. I do apologize for the quality, but as I said, I was rushed trying to capture the image and didn't have the camera set to optimal configuration. It can do much better.

But, at least you can see her as she's moving through the woods. She's moving much more slowly than she was when going through the field.

I'm very good friends with all the farmers out here.


Let me tell you guys a short story.

There was this guy from NYC up here hunting afew years ago.
We were at a bar and this guy came in and started bragging that he shot the biggest deer he's ever seen.
So we went out to see this biggest deer and guess what !!!

He shot a COW with horns !!!!!.
If I remember right he had to pay the farmer $1.250 for that biggest deer.

Okay, so how long should I really wait before checking for buzzards? One friend says a week. But I've seen the big birds on squirrel carcasses around here in a day or two.

I do not know about buzzards, but ravens and crows would be on it the next day.

I agree. They should be on it right away. After a week they'll have it gone. I shot a deer once and left it in the field after gutting. I went to the house to get a truck and to lose a layer or two of clothes. When I got back to it, birds had already pecked out it's eye's. Glad that's all they did because I was going to have the head mounted...........

Okay, I'll head over there in a few minutes to see what's up. The big concern is that a bear or Florida panther might have made off with the carcass and dragged a mile away or something. That'd suck.

Forgot about this pic. My bro just sent it to me. I shot the 5pt and my niece got her first deer during the same afternoon. She just turned 14 during deer season. The gun is her dads old 30-30 Marlin.

My wife says that is an Emine with it's winter coat on......... I say if you looked up a bit more you might see a deer !!!! Stop looking at the weasel and look for deer!
