Deer hunters, a pox on all of them!

My farm is located in the middle of a huge conservation area that allows deer hunting and dealing with the city folks that come here to hunt (anyone can hunt, no permission required from the land owner) is about more than I can stand.

I've had my house shot twice in two years, the machine shed more times than I can count and can't tell you how many cars/pickups I've called on and towed from my property or from the road when they don't park completely off the road.

Last year I heard someone talking and went to investigate and a couple yahoos had set up a tree stand in a tree right on the fence line when the law forbids them from discharging a fire arm within 1000 ft of a home. We got into a verbal exchange that didn't end until the game warden showed up and eventually confiscated their weapons and wrote them bench appearance warrants.

So to all the deer hunters out there be warned, show up in this neck of the wooods and you'll quickly find you are not wanted and not many people will be friendly towards you. Do something silly and I'll do my best to make it a very expensive outing for you.

:eek: I have a friend that is trying to get me to go with him to your fine state for a little hunting trip. Which part of the state are you in???? He was wanting to go to the North Eastern part of the state ... I just want to make sure that if I go I am far away from your place! ;):)

I apologize for the fact that there are inconsiderate , stupid, disrespectful, people that call themselves deer hunters. I can very much understand your frustration. But there are alot of us that take the sport of deer hunting very much to heart and despise the type of people you have just described. I have dealt with those types myself and in no way consider them one of us. The group I hunt with pay a hefty sum to lease land to hunt so WE don't have to deal with them either. I fully support causing as much headache as possible for the people that deserve it.
But please remember , its kinda like boaters, there are the inconsiderate slobs on the water that REAL boaters hate, Or drivers on the road.
I think we do a service, the deer population is extreme, they cause crop damage, car accidents etc. And it puts meat in the freezer. But I do feel your pain .

The deer have large stones where I live. I don't hunt them, but thank god many of them are adapting to looking both ways before crossing the street. I know so many people that drive hours away to go hunting when you can get one by just throwing a rock where I am.

Here's a few pix. Most of my deer were harvested b/4 we broke down and decided to buy a digital camera.

The "live" one was 2 weeks b/4 it landed in my freezer. The mount on the wall gets "disrespected" by my wife once a year. I've learned to put up with it....

bubba - Unfortunately, every state has those same yahoos...........

Is it legal to go into the woods and take a deer with knife or a rock or even make your own spear, this guy at work is bragging about killing a deer being no challenge anymore, he wants to go into the woods and take one primitive like.

Bubba, I also agree with the others that most of what you have had to put up with should not happen. It is a shame there are slobs everywhere, and some of them hunt. I am sorry that you have to put up with that kind of stuff. I also can tell you that if I would go to Northeast Missouri to hunt, and I happened to be in your location, you WOULD NOT have any of those issues with me or my hunting party. We would go out of our way to make you feel comfortable with our presence. People's safety and keeping locals happy are MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than harvesting a deer.

Our season started on oct 11. I have been seeing deer every time I go but having only 2 doe tags and wanting to have the girlfriend son kill a doe I have not shot anything. I did see a buck but grossly underestimate the distance and shot under it. Anyway, I finally take the 14 yo with me and I see no deer whatsoever... Now Im willing to shot and I wont see a thing now.... beats me....

Hi w musky and all
Its nice you can hunt both states... My 1st season is 9 days and then I do muzzleloader that goes 16 days I think. after Thanksgiving, desolate hunting. Had my coldest ever last year -14 when I went out. Deer moving all over, but gun didnt shoot straight. Something wrong with the nut behind the stock:p We have a few perm stands but the land owner doesnt like us to build stuff in his trees. He sells to loggers sometimes and nails in the wood really drops the value I guess...So we get to freeze our arses off on ladder and hang ons etc.. . and we sleep in a referbed chicken coop.
I will cheer for Gophs ... but............. Go Gophers

Big bummer this year. Had bull elk and cow tag. Couldn't go, "the Man" had his foot on my neck so I worked and worked and worked. I was really juiced to pull the trigger on my new 300 mag. The .06 had some trouble putting them down. I hope next year!

The deer hunt here was only four days where I drew out and wouldn't ya know it. I'm starting to despise "the Man". My buddy got a nice 4x3 that spread 33". Looked like it came out of Sonora.

Bubba, I feel for ya man. As with everything, there's always someone out there to ruin it for the responsible people.

Ouch Both tags went unused sun a bch Never have hunted anthing bigger then Mn whitetails, sounds fun...

The elk hunt is a hoot as we usually have a huge camp. I scouted my huge bull for three straight sunday's. 380 mile round trip, man....I put a lot of work into it this year and to not be able to go just made my heart fall through my acehole:mad:My dad, thankfully, filled the cow tag for me.

I gave my so called buddy the gps coord. of the places I scouted. Dirty rat shot my bull. HUGE 6x6!!! I had the 300 dialed in soooooo nice too.

Once again... OUCH actually Double OUCH W T H ?

That's cool you have some private land to hunt on. Always be nice to the landowner so you don't lose it. Ya, nails tend to dull blades alright. I can understand why loggers don't like them. Sleeping in a refurb chicken coop is different. Talk about a man cave.............................

So your gun doesn't shoot straight sometimes either. Happens to me too. I just don't understand it!:)

Talked to my brother tonite. He's been seeing a bunch of does/fawns and a spike in dads field. He hasn't seen deer like that in years. He talked to the folks tonite, I guess there were 5 bucks in the field. Sounds like one may be pretty decent. Looks like I'll be watching the field on the opener! The pic of the wall mount I posted came from that field.

Tonite the wife saw an 8pt walk across the road just down from our house. I'm able to hunt my place here too.

Excitement just sarted to build this evening. Could be a fun season. Time will tell.

Gophers started out looking good(offensively), but fizzled in a hurry.....

No. Not legal.
He'll be arrested for harassing wildlife. And he'll deserve it, too.

Tell him to buy a hedgeball stave. There's a bow inside it waiting to be found.
Then build his own arrows from scratch with self knocks from Port Orford Cedar shafts and fletch with turkey feathers he got last spring.
Then learn to knap his own broad heads and tie them on with sinew from a deer he killed last year.
Then practice, practice practice until comfortable shooting out to 25 yards.

Finally, he should build his own moccasins with the brain tanned hide from last year's deer and head into the woods, hunting from the ground. Use no scent products and no camo, just earth toned wool clothing.

There's no greater challenge than sneaking up on and outwitting a deer's keen senses on his own turf with none of the modern technology or fancy gadgets. He'll feel like a kid again and every deer taken is a trophy to beat even the biggest mount on his wall, even if only a little spike buck.

Then and only then will he have earned bragging rights. But, after all that he won't be bragging anymore as it'll have taught him some much needed humility.... if ya know what I mean....

Wrong.

If ya wanna have REAL bragging rights, ya gotta run the animal down and then finish it off.

These fellas in Africa use "persistence" hunting to run down and kill a Kudu. The runner ran after the animal for EIGHT HOURS before finally making the kill. THAT is a bragging right. Sitting in a tree stand with a thermos full of coffee and a sack lunch isn't.

The video is 7 minutes long but worth the look.

Here's a nice Kudu.

Re: DEER HUNTERS !!! Got buck fever yet? Maybe we should post pics ?

That's definitely doing things the hard way!

:)

I too had become bored with hunting and sought a more challenging method. First I bought a muzzle loader and hunted with that a while. Next I went to a flint lock and all the assorted goodies that go with. Finally I bought a longbow and began practicing.

It really does make you feel like a kid again. And here I am 10 years later still hunting with nothing but longbow, and enjoying every outing as though it were my first season as a boy. I didn't go to the extremes I spoke of above, I sue store bought equipment, but I know people who have gone to such extremes and they enjoy themselves immensely. My dad was one of those.

He and a friend of his hunted with homemade archery tackle back in the mid 50's. They didn't have internet or any other information, jsut decided one day it'd be fun. Nebraska had just introduced the archery-deer season so they made up their minds they were going to give it a go. Neither had the money, being young kids in latter high school, to go purchase a Fred Bear or Ben Pearson so they started experiementing. Bows made from willow limbs, 6 to 7 feet long. Arrows made from some kind of weed, I'll have to ask dad because I don't remember what species. Points made from pieces of tin, sharpened with a file. They drove around in the hills and shot great horned owls for the feathers. (Relax, it wasn't illegal back then) Once they figured out how to get arrows to fly right and practiced up for accuracy they were ready. They had to figure out everything on their own via trial and error. No mentors or instruction data or anything, not even any books from our little local libraries out here in the sticks. Sighting a deer in these parts was extremely rare in those days so when they bought deer tags that fall, they took off for points west and north to hunt. Valentine area if I recall correct, along the Niobrara River.

Long story short, they both succeeded and filled their tags. It was no easy task, either, they hunted hard and wore themselves out but stuck with it going on sheer determination and brought home the prizes! The rack from dad's now hangs on my trophy wall and it'll be passed on to my boy when the time comes. Dad's buddy still has his rack on his wall.

These are the kinds of stories that one could brag about.... but they never did. Heard them both tell of the hunt but never once did they come across as the proud and haughty jerks that seems so common among today's "hunters".... if ya know what I mean...

Fer sure! Those guys are way more rugged than I am! I'm gonna keep everything in perspective as I'm sitting in my covered ladder stand with my coffee and lunch.

I've been scouting several times this season, including just 4 days ago. Pretty doggoned dry out there. No rain in October. I do plan to go scouting again this week and go even deeper into the woods in hopes of finding fresher sign.

General gun season starts in my WMA on Nov. 13th and I'm nearly ready. Have a few more things to order online. Heh heh. :D
