with coolers that can't survive his adventures. I bought a 120 quart Igloo about this time last year to take on weekend rafting trips (class I-II) and to use on the barge when another family joins us. I acknowledge I'm kinda hard on stuff, but I've already broken off both latches. That was the last latch...er straw. I'm getting an Engel, Yeti or possibly a Canyon (formerly Galaxy which was formerly Icey-Kool). These things will send a guy into big time sticker shock, but I expect it would last a minimum of fifteen years (and likely much longer), in which case it would more than pay for itself, not just in eliminated frustration, but in actual dollars that would otherwise be spent on ice and the replacement of inferior grade coolers. I've zeroed in on the 120 quart line, which will run me $350 to $500 depending on the brand I choose, who charges how much shipping, etc. Right now I'm leaning toward a 123 quart Engel but was wondering whether anyone had any thoughts.

Huh. We've had an Igloo 100 qt for years with no problems. You may have to ease up a little, big fella'!:)

I've had an Igloo for several years and it's O.K., but if/when I replace it, I'm gonna drain the bank account for a Yeti....really nice cooler!...probably last a guy forever!

If I am reading this right, They are $5.99 at the igloo store online under parts, full size cooler.

Yep. Probably that much at Academy too, but new latches won't make it a good cooler. Can't even sit on the thing. Very disappointing. They really don't make 'em like they used to.

So did you go all Iaconelli on that cooler or what?

No, but I'm about to. I just noticed one day that one of the latches was broken, then a couple of days later the other one was. Piece o' junk. I'm not buying any more cheap coolers.

Next time, try closing the lid before sitting on it. :D:D

I have a 94 qt Marine with matching cushion that has been used as a seat for close to 10 years now. I've had to replace a couple of latches but's that's about it.

I've never even tried sitting on it. The admiral (who is very petite) sat on it just long enough for me to tell her that one couldn't be sat on and the lid is now caved just a tad. Imagine what this 185 pounder would do to it. The Igloos, even the marine ones, are just not what they were. Sad but true, and an Igloo marine is $250 for the size I need, so I might as well spend another hundred or two and get a cooler that's rotomolded and will last forever. I need something I can sit on, stand on and fly fish from, and drag from the boat to the gravel bar camp without wondering when the handle will come off. Unless I'm mistaken that means I'll have to pony up.

I still regularly use the 48qt Igloo with the moulded cushion top that I bought in 1978. It is in front of the console in my avatar.

I admit that it is on its second set of hinges, third latch and second drain plug.

Cooler's last long if they are filled with good beer, fine wine, spirits and ice.

Wallyworld soft drinks and koolaid will kill them fast :D

If Yetis are good enough for Jim Shockey, they are good enough for me!

That said, my Igloos work well, I can sit on them, and they have lasted for years. I even have two 120QT ones that I have used for 3 years now ... and I got them out of the garbage!

Gotta agree with Wimusky and Lipp ... must be operator error!

My coolers last because I feed them Gatorade and sammiches.

Was not aware of the Yeti or Engel coolers until now. Those would be great at Lake Powell!

Yeah, they're the real deal. Cost a fortune, but they'll give you decades (and probably a lifetime) of service. There's another outfit called Canyon Coolers. They're a new name, but they bought an existing line that was known for great coolers but infuriating customer service (read lack thereof). They're trying to get their name out there, so their prices are a little lower than everyone else's right now, but quality is reportedly just as good. Might want to check them out if you're thinking about springing for a real cooler. http://canyoncoolers.com/ I'm still on the fence, but once I jump off I'll probably get a Canyon or Engel just because by the time you pay Yeti's shipping costs you're looking at five bills and three weeks' lag time, while there are Engel dealers that stock the big coolers and waive shipping costs and the 120 quart Canyon is only four bills including shipping. Yeti better wake up.

I bought the same one at West Marine this year. Not too expensive and I sit on it with no problems. I got the pad too but only put it on when I have extra passengers. I got mine with the stainless latches. I think you can upgrade to them if you want. I haven't had any problems but mine doesn't see a lot of rough use. I have it secured with the turnbuckle flush mounts and it seems to be doing fine so far.

Just ordered a 120 quart Yeti. Better be the shiznippity for what it cost. Now Sasto will have a seat when he goes on a float trip with me.:D
