How come no one mentioned the Barette .50? With proper optics you could drop the cow from your easy chair if she was in the next county :D

Seriously, the 7mm is one heck of a boom stick. I have only fired one, and that was plenty. There is no doubt when you squeeze off a 7mm that what ever you hit is dead.

Re: Do I need another gun? If so, what?

Just my main point, Nosleep.

I am confident that I could harvest her with my .243, but not that it would be quick and clean.

We agree that a true sportsman will be sure of quick and clean. A .25-20 is for plinking and small game. A .243 might be a bit light for your big, Canadian bucks, but it is ideal for small Texas deer.

I agree that a man cannot have too many guns, like fishing tackle, good books or fine single malt scotch, not to mention boats and engines. But I need a valid rationale to go spend a grand or more on one hunt. I figure 200 to 300lb.of prime beef would cost that much.

I've got a Browining 30-06 pump rifle, love it. My dad also has a 7mm bolt action. With the muzzle brake the 7mm kicks like a pea shooter, but man is it loud. You can feel the concussion wave on your face when you fire it. Either of these should drop your target.

Amen JB
Get close with your 45/70 government, thats more
than enough rifle. If you'd like to hunt in this
neck of the woods, and you certainly can. Get
yourself a 300 winchester magnum, inexpensive
and the only big game rifle you will ever need.
Your 40 caliber rifles sound kinda old and likely
would appreciate the retirement.

Re: Do I need another gun? If so, what?

My collection: Rem 7mm mag, Browning citori 12 ga o/u, Zoli 12 ga O/u skeet, Rem 870 pump 12 ga, Marlin 30/30 lever action, Marlin 22 mag, rem 22lr auto, stainless smith & wesson .357 revolver, .40 sw auto, H&R single shot 12 ga. I have a few, and also don't need much push to buy another, but I doubt I'd buy a large caliber rifle for a "one" shot Buffalo hunt, be hard to justify with the little lady. Borrow a 7mm mag or 300 mag from a buddy and bring him some Buffalo steaks for burning one of his cartriges, be glad to let you borrow mine if your down in San Antonio, you should hurry up as Deer season opens this Saturday I think, and someone may beat you to it. Good luck JB.

Re: Do I need another gun? If so, what?

Not a big game gun, but I engoy shooting my Winchester mdl 94 30-30 lever. It's justa fun gun to fire. Now if I really wanted to get something off the shelf to go after larger game, I would have to go with the biggest gun in my collection (I'm not much of a hunter). Unfortunately, they don't make them anymore that I know of, and its hard enough to find shells, much less a variety of grains for it. It has all the power I could want for hunting, but it has been retired to target shooting 1-2 times a year. It is a 303 British with civilian stock. Not sure if the date is the date of mfgr, but it has 1918 stamped on it. Gobs of power, and little or no kick. Weighs quite a bit though..... :D

How about a 303 British Infield. Bolt action. The mag holds 14-15 rounds (but you wont need them). You can pick them up new sometimes at a gun and pawn. Mine was my dads first hunting rifle that he fitted to a beautiful maple sport stock he ordered form a magazine. As a 7 year old child I watched him finish it and the 22 savage he gave me. I would call it "The Elephant Gun" because he told me that it has killed more big game than any other gun in the world. Not because it is the best per se, but because it was plentyful all over the world.

Ten years ago in orlando I would see one or two in nearly every gun/pawn around for about $75. Some still have the sticky military preservative all over indicating that they had been stored new.
When I hunt hogs I have to go for a head shot or it will shatter a shoulder or ham. You will need a but pad at the minimum. I wish I had bought another as a spare. Big Bang for the buck. I also have a 45-70 1863 springfield longrifle, but I dont hunt as well with it.

...........JB,...I sure wish you would let me give you a hand with this...I know a couple of guys ;) ...(jgregory and aspeck {  } )that are experienced in luring bulls with a clever looking suit. Once the bull has his way with them  ..er the cow then we (I mean you) nail him in all his glory!... :p ..

What aya say?

As it turns out I have plenty of time. None of the local processors will touch her before the end of deer season. That is January.

I should be able to get a much better deal on a wider range of guns by then, too.

JasonB and Oddjob,
I still use my fathers British Le-Enfield .303 rifle. What a bueat, I have lost count of the deer it's taken down, even over long range shots and all without a scope. I still use the open sights. .303 ammo's easy to get over here though.
Magazine size doesn't matter over here as one shot per animal is the accepted count and after that you don't want to shoot any more till you've cleaned up the first.
JB wouldn't go for it as they're a bolt action.
Ross

Re: Do I need another gun? If so, what?

OK JB, no bolt action narrows it down.
My other big caliber rifle is a Marlin 336CS, which is a side ejecting lever action carbine. It's chambered for .35 Remington. This round is available in two wieght grains, 150gr. for deer and 200gr. for your beefalo.
This rifle can be had for $300. The CS is a walnut checkered stock. It's balanced, light and it fits and looks good in my saddle scabbord.
This is a brush gun and kicks but to 150 yards. After that, the 200gr. has one heck of a drop.

Nice ranch gun JB, check it out. ;)
