I will see if I can find it.
It came from my grandfather 40 year ago and he said it was a 9MM, but I don't know.

All I know is I shot it a couple times and it would split trees.

Big ol long bullet and all.

Like I said, I like my Rugers.

I still ain't found it yet, but I did run across a picture of it when I had it up for sale at the flea market.
I do like the Marlin 336, Skinny. I once owned a Marlin 1895 in .45-70, which was a nice gun. The 1895, like the 444, was a beefed up 336 action.

Surprised that nobody has mentioned the Savage model 99 series. Another nice lever gun.

SBN's Mauser could be a 9X57mm model 98. One heck of a powerful round. Most 98s were 7X57 or 8X57mm. The 9X57 was popular in Africa for large game, but some countries issued it to their military. The pic looks like a military model.

Red sky at night.. .
JB

My .303 Enfield (10 shot magazine by the way)is an awesome long range rifle. Second one I've owned, made in 1918 and it's the Australian Armory model. Ammo is easy to get as well. It's **** heavy and long though especially as I also have the 18" bayonet it came with :) .
I also like my 98 Mauser carbine, rebarreled to .308 Nato(from 8 mm I beleive), it's originally a WW2 German rifle, pretty good kick as it's light, but real accurate. I keep telling a buddy of mine to get a surplus rifle as they are cheap, plenty of parts around and lots in great condition. Heinz
P.S. I also love my SKS 7.62x39 with 30 rd. mag. :) heinz.forster@copart.com

JB,

Have you considered a Browing BAR (semi auto) in 308 Winchester. Would look good in the gun rack ;) and your grandson could use it for deer and other game. Just a thought

Mike

Auuwww Skinny, you had to mention the .35 Remington. What a brush gun. Even for deer I will only use the 200 gr bullets. Remember one year 3 doe were trotting along the far ridge, about 200 yards away. Friend of mine told me I could never hit one of those with the old brush gun. I was young and foolish, but I did know my gun, so I took aim, about two feet above here nose and a foot in front of here nose (remember, I like head shots). Pulled the trigger and the deer dropped! Hit her in the base of the head and broke her neck! I couldn't believe it, but tried not to let on my shock! Yea, the .35 Remington is a good gun - I have 2 of them, but they are pumps, so you wouldn't be interested, JB. I need the .30 call in the Remington Model 35 to complete the set.

JB, I'm going to buy my wife a new rifle, and these new Winchester Short Magnums have very good ballistics in 270,7mm,or 300win. and less recoil than belted magnums. I vote 30-06 as best all around one gun for blacktail to moose. Don't know about bison. Have fun with the research, I am :)

Not much of a gun enthusiast JB, but have you considered maybe a black powder rifle like maybe a Hawkins 50 cal.? Might make for a real interesting hunt.

Hello
you might try one of the old double gun nitos express's. years ago when I was really dumb and idestructable a frind of mine in Cleburne Texas collected guns. He had a nitro express double that I think was chambered for .480. I dont know what the knock down power at the progectile end was but at the stock end it was considerable. would toss about a bucket load of dirt from the back stop. only shot it once. I was young and dumb but learned quik. the brusies on my sholder, arm and face went away after a couple weeks. I dont shoot much any more but I used to have a decent gun collection. selling my browning sweetsixteen was the dumbest move I ever made. I would think that a moistly grown buffalo would take at least a 30-06. the 45-70would be ok at closer ranges. that animal was rather tough. wow sounds like this forum appecitaes fine machinery as much as I do.
good luck and keep posting and always remember.
Gun control means using Both hands.

Just had to get in on this, having shot caribou with a 243 I can tell you it works just have to be sure of your shot it only takes one. I own savage 99's in both 308 and 250 either would do the job for you but as you mentioned a 45-70 the Marlin guide gun is real sweet I bought one for my son, he takes it along for bear when we are out & about. The 12 ga would work but than no new gun. I try to find a excuse two or three times a year. You always need another one.

RATSA_KRATSA!!

Shoulda gone ahead and shot that miserable beast.

Not only did she knock down another fence and tear up a neighbor's fences before leaving for parts unknown, I had to chase my daughters horses all over the @#$%^& county to bring them home.

Fix fences, chase horses, no bison in the freezer, but WORST of all, no new gun. :(

Oh, woe!!

Get out there and get that critter.
With a little planning you could dress that bison
yourself, buy an extra freezer. Make some sausage.
You said it was around 600lb.Get some meat cutting info, and go for it.

JB, I'm kinda with nosleep on this one. If you get the chance take her soon. By the time a processor is ready to take her who knows where she will have wondered off to.Heck she may be halfway to her birthing grounds by then. And if she keeps destroying fences her previuos owner may keep giving her away till somone takes him up on his offer.

JB, is the bison still on your property, or did he take flight because he heard all the talk of getting a new gun just for him? If he is still there, get him, man. If you need any help - I will bring the gun!

JB, you've got that 243 Winchester!!, I can assure you it wouldn't be the smallest gun that has knocked down one of those critters.
