Do I need gasket sealer on this homemade t-stat gasket?

I bought some gasket material for my 74' Johnson 6hp T-stat cover, cut out almost a perfert gasket, installed it and did a tank test. There is no t-stat in there. But my new t-stat, gasket etc will be here next week. I cranked it up in the tank and for what ever reason it takes it about 1/2 minute or so for the water to start coming out the exhaust. Is that ok?? Does that first time I crank it after its been sitting up a few days. Runs fine. I still have just a few drops of water leaking from the side of the housing between the gasket and the housing. But very little but still its leaking. Should I take it apart and put some gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket or will it seal itself up overnight??? Fishermanms

manufacturer reccomends adding gasket sealer to both sides of the gasket when re installing, along with some on the threads of the bolts.

Just a thought, but if you ever go to change the impeller or water pump, run the garden hose or compressed air up through the water line to flush out whatever junk there may be in there, if any. Ive also seen the grommet from the impeller housing stuck in the water line restricting flow. That 30 seconds seems kind of long to me, when has the impeller last been changed, something that id definately look into, and would give you a chance to flush the water lines at the same time with the t stats out, GL

Blue Permatex..both sides, and bolts..toss the Loctite idea

Re: Do I need gasket sealer on this homemade t-stat gasket?

I have removed the t-stat cover and used sealer both sides of gasker and bolts and sealed it all back up... Just wondering about the flushing out. So if I drop the lower unit, I can use water and or compressed air and flush out the water lines. Can I use compressed air with the t-stat cover off and blow it down in all the little passage ways and back up the tube in the exhaust housing as well and down the tube in the lower unit? And should I remove the bottom screen and blow air up that too? I changed the impeller a couple of weeks ago when I started on this project, replacing fuel pump, points, condensers, coils, rebuild carb, plugs and impeller. The impeller was the only part I changed on the bottom. I have invested a good bit of time and money in this little 6 and it would be a great loss if I damage the engine because of the water taking its time to get to where it needs to go and do its job. Also do I really need to pull the gas line and burn up all the gas thats left in the carb and lines every time I take it out or tank test it. I will be taking it out at least once a week till November and then wait till spring.. ???

And running a 2 stroke out of fuel is not the best of idea as when the fuel runs out so does the only lubrication it has. Use stabilizer in the fuel.

Its not a prob on single carb to run it out of gas...(probably not necessary though unless out for storage)

Thank Ya'll much. I took it out on the lake today. Ran it all over the lake. Still running just fine. In fact ... I think its running a little better than .ast week-end. AND this time I did not run all the gas out... Will see how that affects next week-ends performance. Today it cranked up on first pull. That surprised me. ... Anyways... Thanks again...Fishermanms:)
