Yup, Bondo is stearin you Correct!!!! You need to do a thorough inspection of the inside of the boat and take some Core Samples of the Transom, Stringers and Motor Mounts. I suspect you'll find a lot of wet, soggy rotting wood needing to be removed and replaced. If so, post up some more pics, and we'll be here to help you all along the way.;)

Re: Drain Plug Install/Repair

thanks wooden, i did look over the boat and the floor and stringers in the bilge are solid, but didn't take core samples, i was doing the knock test.
The PO got rid of it because the outdrive blew up, chewed up the upper gears.

Maybe thats why its missing the drain plug housing? cause it got soft? sh@t

Re: Drain Plug Install/Repair

I agree it looks rotten...maybe that explains why the garboard plug came out?
We can want the transom to be good and solid all we want, heck, we can even convince ourselves that it's fine...but to truly know, requires investigation and core samples...

Re: Drain Plug Install/Repair

alright guys, was able to investigate a little last night. Kicking my self i didn't catch this before the purchase but oh well. So when I looked down on the transom wood from the inside, i notice wood is missing toward the bottom, its like they cut a section out but didn't replace it so I"m missing atleast a inch of wood surrounding the drain hole. Its funny how its straight cut, was this original? Sorry i couldn't take a picture last night cause it was dark. I drew something up so you can visualize it, sorry guys i'm not tech savy. Where the arrow is pointing thats the wood that is missing, and its straight.....what are your thoughts? why is it like this? you think i can patch it up and work aroudn the engine? or do i need to pull it out.

Hope that makes sence.

Re: Drain Plug Install/Repair

Hopefully, Wog will be along to answer this for you?! I've not seen any boat with that particular lay-up (not having wood in the bottom with the drain thru it?). But it would explain why the drain plug is missing. I'm hoping that if the surrounding wood is good and dry, maybe a wood/PB and CSM patch MIGHT get you sea worthy once again? Maybe that's why it was taken out so clean (straight-edge) as to mitigate in more water infiltration/rot? If the surrounding wood is not "rot-free", then you'll need to replace transom or at the very least a portion of it?

Good Luck!!

Re: Drain Plug Install/Repair

W/out an actual pix, and KNOWING what drain plug came on the boat, I'd guess that the original drain plug WAS THRU a wooden transom & leaked.

The drain plug was removed, the soft bottom of your transom plywood was cut out. This left the transom too thin to reinstall a typical thru hull plug, so they installed an exterior mount garboard plug.

That's ^^^ all speculative as I've never seen the transom of a 1996 Rinker 180. It might have come w/ the garboard style plug originally, but I doubt it.

I'd for sure THOROUGHLY inspect the entire transom for other evidence of water intrusion. It is often NOT just 1 area that's been affected...

Re: Drain Plug Install/Repair

Thanks baja/curt,

I'm starting to think they had to remove the engine to get such a straight-edge cut, no way they could of kept the engine installed. Looks like i need to check it out more this weekend but suppose to be cold on saturday and snowing on Sunday. Now i need to start researching on pulling the 3.0 out.....wife is going to love this news

I'd spend some time inspecting everything 1st, unless you've already probed that drain hole & found soft wood.....

Wait, is the TRANSOM plywood full size & just the trim ring or horse collar you drew, the only portion that's been cut off?

If so, then I revise my reply. It may have been done that way originally. That horse collar is used to make the keyhole thickness dimension correct: 2-2.25". The drain hole may not have been thru it at all, ever, so YES it is correct, and likely original. My comments & the need to do a thorough inspection of the transom, still stand, as does the thought that a garboard drain wasn't original.

^^^ This is 1 reason pix are so important.... And why it's good to take time to look thoroughly & consider ALL possibilities...

So don't ruin the Admiral's day just yet:

Re: Drain Plug Install/Repair

Sorry Jbcurt, HA

Thanks Wood for chiming in, will have to wait for decent pictures for this weekend, (this 9 to 5 job gets in the way, especially during the winter season, gets dark quick).

The shaded area in the picture above can't be more than half a inch of wood, i know its strange....should i take a core sample of that too?

For the core samples:

IMHO: GOOD news is pushed up the comm channels to the Admiral ASAP..... Bad news is often better held close until the extent of the unexpected problem can be confirmed..... PARTICULARLY when funding for a boat rehab is involved.........
