Was going to replace the water pump today.

First step in the factory manual is to remove pin from shift rod and push rod towards the power head, which I did.

Went to drop the lu, and it would come down about 3/4", and stop. I'm guessing that the shift rod did not disconnect.

What is the trick to get it free. There is also a nylon bushing that came from the engine case where the shift rodruns thru that I cannot for the life of me get back in position.

What am I missing.

come on fellas, somebody knows what the secret is.

With the nylon bushing out of place, I can't even get the hitch pin back in the shoft rod.

I'd much rather be fishing than typing.

Maybe they don't feel like looking up the yr to see if it has the 2 peice shift rod. Mine does but its a 1959. If theres an access plate halfway down the leg...it might be it.

Re: E50tlcud shift rod disconnect

Here, I thought model no would be sufficient. My mistake for thinking. If I could think anymore I wouldn't be looking for help.

It's a 1987 50 HP Evinrude on the new to me Sylvan ProFisherman.

Thanks for pointing out my omission.

The SeaLoc manual says something about taking the starter off, but it covers way too many years and models to be taken seriously. My Evinrude factory service manual makes it sound way too easy.

Thanks

The disconnect is under the carburetor. The electric start model has a pin pulled from the starboard side, then push the shift lever to the center.

It's similar to the one in the thumbnail.

Re: E50tlcud shift rod disconnect

Thanks, ezeke, but my problem is with the shift rod bushing. It is split nylon, and came out of the bracket, and the lever will not go in with the bushing out of place. I just spent the better part of an hour trying to get it back in place, but it does not want to go.

Just proves Murphys law- No job is as simple as it first appears.

Re: E50tlcud shift rod disconnect

No body has any ideas on how I can solve my bushing problem?

Time for me to retire from trying to help others on this forum.

400 or so times I've tried to help others, and all I get when I need help is a blowup of a parts diagram with the same instructions that are in my FACTORY service manual.

At least ezeke tried. More than I can say for the majority of forum members.

Thank you ezeke for trying

Re: E50tlcud shift rod disconnect

well the catch is the people that know most of the answers , dont need your help, and the people that could use your help, dont have the answers...

its a delima,

I have gotten frustrated....but the people that usually know the answers, cant read every thread, or are not on EVERY day..

sometimes it takes several days and a few replies to keep it high on the list to get the attention of the right guy who has the answer.

i have a 1988 48 special./..but havent taken the LU off yet..

i would have loved to help you..

of all the shift rods i have removed..I cant picture this BUSHING you speak of...

I know there are grommets that keep water out of the cowl.. that the shift rod goes through.

looked up the schematic...and it appears the bushing maybe in the gear case schematic...but they offer several long and short...

wish i could help more...

you know they say to push the shift rod into a gear for LU removal

this is because there is more room to access the parts you are trying to seperate when the shifter pushes everythign up high.

i am not sure now if it is reverse or forward...but it is one or the other, and it isnt nuetral!!

good luck
