Re: Engine mount repair

So its finally getting warm enough to fiberglass and I was able to get mounts and bulkead bedded and filleted and got a layer of csm in most areas until I ran out of resin so now Im waiting for more. I had a question about when I finish glassing everything I want to repaint my bilge area do I need to add wax to final layer to be able to paint or am I able to paint it without adding wax. Thanks for any help

I'd add wax to the final layer of the resin if you are going to paint.

Re: Engine mount repair

Okay so I went ahead and used the 3m resin for my final coat. Mixed up first batch adding hardner as the directions said (1/2 oz hardner for 64 oz resin) as I was finishing the one mount the resin was starting to harden so I threw the rest away. On the next batch I mixed 32oz of resin with a little over 1/8oz of hardner to slow it down a little bit. I went to boat today and its still not dry. Is it possible it still needs more time or did I just not add enough hardner. Thank you for any help

TJ - Glad to help......Keep us posted on your progress.......And take alot of pics!

Good Luck with your project!

ok, have read you info, but am not able to do this work myself. where would you suggest, besides a marina to take an I/o for the motor mount area tobe repaired. ave a 1980/something imperial, that I was told the area holding the motor mounts is getting bad and should be replaced soon with fibreglas etc. would an auto body shop be able to do this? or?

1) you can handle this (none of us thought we could until we visited these forums)
2) Do not take it to an automotive body shop they won't know what to do
3) You can do this
a) Pull motor
b) Measure everything
c) Get new wood, fiberglass , resin
d) Cut wood and test fit
e) glass in new wood
f) reinstall motor
