Before ya get crazy just check yer anti siphon valve. I’ve had same issue.

So I bought another anti siphon valve and when I removed the old one there was no ball inside it, somebody must have removed it previously! There goes that thought! Gonna put one in anyway for safety purposes!

Since you have your fuel line off see if you can run the boat using an external tank it will either fix the problem or not and isolate your issue

Well, I don't have an external tank and tbh I'm not sure I could get one big enough, I don't think there's any problems getting fuel, she starts and runs with no problems. Issue doesn't present itself until the end of the trips. Runs and idles fine for hours, it's only on dock approach this happens!

You might simulate that before you dock next time. Run all day, then open the engine compartment and have someone watch the shift interrupt switch to see if when you shift in and out of gear it is moving and killing your boat. My bet is that is where the issue lies.

Ayuh,..... The lower shift cable lays right next to the exhaust y-pipe, the reason for the spiral wrap,.....

After a trip, things are Hot, like the y-pipe, 'n the lower shift cable right next to it,.....

Maybe the heat is gummin' up the works,..??

Maybe this is yer 1st sign of impendin' lower shift cable failure,.....

This is my plan, last time I was out I knew nothing about nothing! Now after all the research and all the knowledge from the awesome people on this board I'm fairly confident I can work this out once I see it happen in water again!

This would be nice, means there might be a hope of shielding it from the heat! Although my cables are on top of motor at the back closer to transom I'm not looking at it at moment but I don't think the cable is that close to the exhaust! Could be wrong tho, gonna have to check this for sure when in boat next! Pouring rain today of course! Lol

One quick question, I noticed while running in my driveway with the muffin on when I move in and out of gear forward to reverse or vice versa, the shifter plate doesn't move at all, does the boat have to be in the water for the plate to engage the switch?

Ayuh,.... Load on the prop, causes the switch to work,....

but I don't think the cable is that close to the exhaust!

It is,....

This is good news! The heating up of the cable causing it to malfunction makes total sense to me! Not getting my hopes up but maybe if I shield or insulate cable it may just do the trick!

It it does do this, then your just band-aiding the problem. Your shift cable needs replacing but you may get a little more time before it goes completely out

This is true, but at least I would have at least diagnosed the problem!

So it seems I can't catch a break here, I took the boat out this evening to see if I could re create my problem, about 30mins into my touring around I noticed the temp gauge climbing and not stopping, a fair bit of steam coming out of the tailpipe also. I limped back to the dock and good news is she clicked in and out of gear and made it to the dock with ease, Yay! But seems there's a new problem, not so Yay! Water is spitting out the exhaust but I guess not enough! Impeller maybe? Is switching out an impeller a tough job? I will continue to try and research this but I totally trust the info on this forum!
Cheers

Changin the impeller is easy enough. Go to the Merc Adults Only section (link in my Sig) and there are plenty of how to's

Just wanna make sure, the impeller is in the lower unit right? The lady at the marine parts place confused me when she was showing me a closed unit that's located on the motor! I was under the assumption that I have to remove the lower unit to access the impeller!

So I had a bit of time and decided to run the boat in my driveway for a bit, water spits out the exhaust, I can touch my hands on the exhaust manifolds but my temp gauge climbed to 200°f. The Inlet hose felt cold but I could feel bubbling in the hose while at idle. Seems to be sucking in some water but probably not enough I'm assuming? Is it possible that could be a thermostat? I'm looking into getting an impeller kit but I'm the type of guy who likes to try and figure out the answers rather than just throwing parts at it!

A hose cannot supply all the water the pump will pull like if the boat was sitting in the water. Put it in the water and test
