I tell my 2yr old not to touch the post because it's fresh wet paint. He nods his head "yes" and says "uh-huh". I take the paint brushes, etc to the shop and say to my wife "Don't let Eric touch the post, its wet paint".

A few minutes later I return and there is Eric standing in the corner of the room facing the wall playing with his fingers and being really quiet....

"Eric, did you touch the post?" he replies, "Uh-huh" and points to where he touched it. "Didn't I tell you not to touch it?" he says "uh-huh".... shows me his hand and says "Yuck!" and laughs an infectious laugh.

Wadda gonna do?

I feel your pain!! I've been through the 'Terrible Twos' three times. As DD said, laugh it off and enjoy the little guy while he young and innocent.

And that is why God made kids cute. You just can't get mad at them. It saves their lives over and over...

ya told him not to touch the post, right?

You had a reason for not touching the post, right?

Seems as though he understood what "Dont touch the post" meant.

So, now...next week when ya tell him not to do something but he does it anyway cause there was no consequence this time.....what you going to do? Let him get away with it again?

Gotta agree with fsh and EF. Because when you tell him to leave the rattlesnake alone and he dont mind. Your gonna feel bad when he gets bit. thier is a reason we tell them no. Sorry you cant be thier buddy and father to. in MHO

Ya don't have to beat the young lad within an inch of his life Mark, but others are right, he should be made to pay some small price. Ya don't have to do it in a mean way but figure out something small, that means a little to him and make him PAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

Some times reverse psychology works beter on kids that age. Show him what would happen if he does what you tell him not to do.

I think I would have left the yuck on his hands for a while as a reminder.

It sounds like the little guy is a hands on kind of person, gonna have to learn from experiance. Patience, Patience, Patience.

All kids should be beaten on a daily basis, the chances are the've done somthing durring the day that you don't know about. Fear, thats the only thing that a child truly understands.

Or you could try locking them up till their 20.

:D :D

(only joking folks)

Re: Eric, don't touch this. It's wet paint....

Man, some of you guys are rough!

Eric is only 2, and it was my own fault he touched it. I knew he would touch it, but I didn't take him with me to prevent that. He HAD to touch it. Its programmed into them to be inquisitive. Its a learning thing.

But, he does know what a "time out" is and we dispense the authority accordingly. Such as he knows he is not allowed to drive cars on the walls or table tops, write on the walls, or pour juice on the floor. If he does, he gets a two minute time out. Just the warning of a time out is enough for him to instantly change his behavior.

So we have to decide what is a "punishable" offense because he did what he knows he is not allowed to do, vs unreal expectations. He felt bad about the paint, or he wouldn't have gone and stood quietly in the corner.

Besides, could you punish this little guy?

Are you sure this isn't DJ instead of EF? ;)

I agree, teach them right and punish them, but I had to add a SA comment too.

The way I see it that is "unreasonable expectation" to leave a two year old with a rattle snake, or any other dangerous situation and expect that they can understand the consequences of not following your rules. To the kid, he thinks "I'm willing to get caught and pay with a time-out in order to play with this cool looking snake". It is the guardians responsability to keep little kids out of harms way.

Nonetheless, I do understand what your point is, and it is taken. :)

well actually my comment was ment to be dripping with saracasm. i am sure mark can raise his own kids. and your right mark it would take alot more than touching some paint to be able to punish him. altho i do see some devilment in his eyes.. and really would you want it any other way?

I knew he would touch it, but I didn't take him with me to prevent that. He HAD to touch it. Its programmed into them to be inquisitive. Its a learning thing.

Im not sure you understand what im saying. So here goes again. we watch our kids as best we can. But when I was about 3 my girl cousin my brother and i were playing outside with moms watching through window. Their was a snake on the ground, I had heard of rattlers but never seen one, to me It was just a snake, I was waving my foot over it picking on it brother said leave it alone its a rattler. well I didnt have to mind big brother, cousin got on top of the dog house. brother went in and got mom , who smoked my butt.
I learned to mind big brother that day.
But my point is I still remember, clearly, was it the butt smoking or the snake, But if I can remember it 55 yrs later something made an impression. and I also think I was old enough to learn a lesson, and did, at 3, so the lessons of life should start early.

when kids come to my house I am constantly amazed at the mothers and fathers that turn thier young kids loose to explore, after all they are in the country. I always call the kids back to me and sternly caution them about the dangers of snakes , the bull, or the billy goat.

Thats my last say so on the matter.

.

But if it had been my rattlesnake instead of just paint... Is my point, They have to learn to mind, sometimes thier life is on the line. Bill Cosby said it best......"All children have brain damage. They are born with it and have to grow out of it". Which means that we all had it too...... :)
