If you are running this motor in a barrel, the water level needs to be higher than the area on the leg where the water pump is located.

When you say the lower unit is getting hot. Are you running it in the barrel for more than 5 minutes? Are you heating the water up real hot by running the motor for a extended time in the barrel?

Is the motor overheating?

the motor is not getting hot just the lower unit,i dont run it very long before it gets to hot but the water is still cold.im not sure how the lower units suppost to act(first time working on a boat motor)but when i start the motor in neutral there is alot of air movement in the barrel almost like its backwards and the intack is pushin air but i cant tell for sure.

That's the way they are. Motor exhaust in the water, makes lots of turbulence. The important thing is the motor. If you cannot let your fingers stay on the head for a bit, then the motor is getting hot. The water pump cools the motor. The motor temperature should be about 145 degrees.

Something is definitely wrong with the water pump. You need to remove the lower unit and find out what is wrong.

Something I almost did with mine is put it in backwards - easy to do because you have to cram it into the housing, bending the fins while you do so. If you bend them the wrong way, it won't work.

Could also be a blockage in the cooling system somewhere. I suck mud/sand into mine when going through certain specific areas (low water) and sometimes need to shove the end of a bottom-bouncer into the pee-hole to get it cleared. (Not very often though, thankfully.)

before i took it apart the last time it was spraying fine.so i no the impeller is in correct and i cleaned out the pee hole there was nothing in it that would stop it from spraying(i ran the barrel low on water, thats why i took it apart to make sure i didnt mess anything up)

How did you do that on an engine that never had one originally?

What part of the L/U is getting hot? Very lower? Mid section?

the lower unit mid section is getting hot not the bottom.and im talking about the hole that sprays water when motor is running.i took off the lower unit cleaned out the copper tube and sprayed water backwards threw that hole untill the water came out clear(there were really tiny pieces of gunk)

Are you sure you have the water tube inserted into the grommet on the water pump housing?

Got it.

It does get hot. In essence, that is the muffler. If there is water spraying out of the exhaust relieff, it is getting water to cool it.

Is this something new that popped up or just something you just noticed?

the exhaust relief is at the bottom of the unit by the prop right?this is a motor i just got it was tore apart when i got it i had to put it back together.if it is getting water to cool it why is the lower unit getting so hot you cant touch it and it starts to smoke

Re: evenrude water circulation problem

The hole that is half way up the mid section is an exhaust relief.

I think you need to run this engine in something other than a barrel to get rue results.

If the cylinder head is not getting hot, you're OK.

Glad you got it running. Congrat's.
