Ever wonder what would happen if you dropped achor at 40 mph?

I took the wife and kids out for a day on the water, riding and fishing. It was getting late and we had a 22 mile ride back up the river to the truck. I asked my wife to pull the anchor while I stowed the rods. All looked good so we took off. About 15 miles later, the boat suddenly yaws hard left and makes a loud wham noise from the back of the boat. I grab the throttle and yank it back. The boat again yaws hard left and then the left (port) window explodes next to my wife's head. Everything comes to a quick stop. Glass is everywhere. My first thought is I hit a log and the outdrive let go but it didn't explain the busted window. When I looked over the left rear corner of the boat, I found the cause. When my wife raised anchor, she didn't stow it in the boat. Instead she set it on the swim deck, still firmly tied with 8 feet of rope to the cleat. I now have a half moon shaped hole to patch on the transom under the swim deck and a window to replace.

Lesson learned... double check everything before moving. If the tempered glass were not there, she could have been killed. A 15 lb mushroom shaped river anchor can do a lot of damage. We were lucky. By the way... I need a port side window glass for a 1990 22.5 foot Bayliner Capri bowrider. So far, no luck finding one. I'm looking into having one made by a glass company. Any other ideas?

I left a downrigger ball in the water nefore attached to a cable, but no harm done. I trust you both thanked the man upstairs for what could have been and end of life experience.

I thought it was a rethorical question. but I was gonna say it will probably skip and fly around taking someones head off. glad you and your family were ok. broken window sucks but I bet you never forget to stow everything
Good luck finding the window. You can probably have a glass shop cut you a tempered glass one as long as its flat not curved

i saw a show once where something similar happened but it turned out a guy had the anchor hit him in the head. they radioed the coast guard for helicopter evacuation to the hospital. he survived with minimal damage. lucky or what. Ed

I was trolling about 8 lines off a pontoon once ang i told everybody to reel in there lines so we could try a different part of the lake and somebody forgot a pole. I hit the gas and I here a line snap and M y uncle lost his nice bomber lure. Pretty exciting though

Try EBAY for that Bayliner glass.
I'm watching constanly for a windshield for my VIP (of course no luck there LOL) but see Bayliners over and over again.
Good luck!

Re: Ever wonder what would happen if you dropped achor at 40 mph?

On my old boat which was a 20' cuddy cabin with a 4.3 V6, I took off and thought "I wonder why I am going so slow, oh well" so I continued at about 20 mph wot. Then I started to turn and I heard a loud bang and the boat took off like crazy. Turned out I was dragging a 35lb. navy anchor w/40ft. of rope the whole time and when I turned the prop cut the rope. Scared the hell out of me and the two gals I had along but no harm except I lost my anchor. I think I was confused b/c I just got off of night shift.

when i pull up the anchor i will sometimes leave it in front of the windwhield, on the bow,
I always worry about the anchor falling off, back into the water while running, so i usually pull it down into the boat, thru the windshield.

Re: Ever wonder what would happen if you dropped achor at 40 mph?

Similar story from when I was a kid. Out fishing in a 12ft alum boat with 9.9hp and was using a bleach jug filled with concrete as an anchor. Set a 1/2" eyebolt into the conrete and tied on about 50ft of nylon rope.

One afternoon while fishing, a storm came up quickly so we reeled in the lines, cranked the motor and headed for the marina. Boat gets up on plane then wham, suddenly we lurch forward and the boat almost stops. I could hear this strange whistling sound then BANG

Forgot to pull the anchor and ended up pulling the eyebolt out of the concrete and the whole thing launched out of the water like a missle and slammed into the transom. Left a dent the size of a ping pong ball. Guess the nylon rope just kept stretching until something broke. Could have taken one of our heads off.

I'm very aware now before getting underway.

Wow.....

It is really a good thing reading some of this stuff.......
as a "newbie" boater, hopefully I can learn from other's mistakes.

Which is good, as I'm sure I'll make my share of my own.....lol

It sounds like a cartoon situation, but in real life it is a nightmare situation.

Re: Ever wonder what would happen if you dropped achor at 40 mph?

wow!!

glad nobody was hurt.

i dropped an anchor while underway one time:
me and my bud had been catfishing and the wind was blowing a lil so to keep the boat from swinging side to side we dropped a stern anchor.
after we decided to call it a day we pulled anchor. i keep both anchors up in the bow storage to help the balance of the boat.
when he pulled the stern anchor he asked "do you want me to put this back up front?". i said "no we will put it up when we get to the dock". the anchor in question only had about 125' of rope since i hardly ever use it (only to steady the boat).
i paid no mind to the location of said anchor ---- it was directly behind me on the rear fishing platfrom (bassboat). as soon as we got up on plain we caught a good wave............yep there went the anchor.............the anchor wasnt attached to anything ....... we just watched the rope uncoil and disappear ....... neither one of us thought to grab hold of it.....it just uncoiled till it was gone.

talk about feeling like a complete idiot.......i have many stories of what not to do ---- i like to take it as lesson learned.....something that i will never do again.....hopefully.

hey isnt this thread a lil old?.....i just noticed the dates..........never to old to teach a lesson though.
