sounds like a link & sink problem, I have 75 70hp Johnson and the only time it has acted that way is when I screwed up the sink (ah, pickup timing is off)....and that ladys and gentlemen is why I always carry a flat screw driver and a pair of channel locks onboard. Oh yeah and some bailing twine...

I have a 1980 Johnson Stinger 75 - very similar to your 70. It was blown when I bought it, so I rebuilt it with .030 oversize pistons, carb kits, new waterpump, etc. It's been one of the best motors I've ever owned. It, too, had a link & synch problem when I first rebuilt it 15-years ago. A local tech showed me how to set it up and it made a world of difference. It's a rocket-ship now!

man ive tried many ways to sink it, lol,but it wont do crap, problem starts after it warms up,runs perfect till then, which is only till past tires.I bought a timer base off ebay. cant wait to install it to see if fixes my problem, till then i still run her the way she is, going on 3yrs now.

theres only one way and if that pickup timing is not right you will have that little lag or big lag especially after it warms up. invest in some aligator clips and teach the wifey what to look for or have her work the throttle....easy now girl just a little more....

when I was learning the link & sink on my looper I went through it a dozen times and never got it exactly right until I got this advice and the real service manual from a friend who is a J/E mech/dealer,

Yeah, my engine has a "personality", but not a bad one, she's just cold natured. She'll buck and fuss at start up but after letting her warm up a bit she's awsome throught the powerband. Nothing wrong with her at all, she's just that way:)

Please put this stuff in the appropriate part of the forum guys, if you want to brag on your motors that's fine but do it in the non repair related section of the outboards

Getting a link and sink just right is a real bear, messed with it for quite awhile till I got it right btu it is worth the effort, with the throttle and timing tied together it has to be just right.

Got an '81 Rude with no complaints, once she warms up runs like a top and it even idles, which I am told is kinda rare.
