Hey guys.. heres the deal. just bought a 20' cc about a month ago and finally got in into the water monday for the fist time. it went well, beter than i expected.. heres my concerns.

the motor is a 1987 evinrude 175 vro.. i disconnected the pump, plug the line at the pump and mixing gas and oil in tank..

motor ran rough.. at first i couldnt get the motor over 2 grand.. then i realized if i put the trim all the way down, i can get the boat to plane.. toped out at around 4 grand ( that seems low).. is that a saftey feature on the trim and tilt so you know your sucking up water? it seems as there is a point where the trim and tilt it alot more sensitive and when i get into that area ( all the way down), i can get the motor up to 4 grand... follow me?

also, i kept having to adjusting the choke every time i turned the motor off.. it seems that when i was moving at a slow speed 1-2 grand, it would have trouble staying primed.. maybe i have a loose clamp and im suckin air somewhere? or spark? carb rebuild?

im going to check compression today.. but i also want to make sure all the cylinders are getting spark.. how do i go about doing that?

please help!!

Re: Evinrude 175 HELP!!!

You don't have chokes, but a primer solenoid, which is a valve that allows fuel to bypass the carburetors and to be injected directly into the intake manifold. Normally, you just push the key in to operate the valve. The red handle should be aligned with the base of the primer solenoid for all normal operation.

If you find that you need to use it much on a warm engine, you may want to rebuild your carburetors with kits.

Re: Evinrude 175 HELP!!!

An inductive timing light or a spark checker is helpful to determine the quality of spark on each plugwire. That engine needs to run at 5750 rpm top end. Anything less than 5500 and it is lugging.

Re: Evinrude 175 HELP!!!

O.K. a few basic questions.
How did it run before you disconnected the oil side of the VRO ??
Why did you disconnect the VRO ??
Did you give the motor a basic health check yet ??
