I can not recall seeing the small square pump on a 40 HP model.----That wonderful little pump came out in 67 I believe and used on many models from 3 to 25 HP and for many years.

Yeah, seems questionable. 0388685 is listed as the replacement on a sister site. Maybe that is a higher capacity(?)

These pumps operate with a POSITIVE pressure pulse.----Not so much with vacuum !------Crankcase compression is fairly similar from one motor to another.-----438556 is the pump I would use.----But then there is nothing that goes wrong with these pumps that a $4.99 diaphragm can't fix !!

So a small up date on the coils, not cracked, tested .4 and .3 between wires, wire to coil both test 3.5 and 3.5. So now i got to clean points up, and see if i can get spark.

Magneto is what i need to look for, not sure if energy is being generated to power up the coils, will try disconnecting the kill wire(s). See what that does.

I usually just replace points and condensers, coils if there is any doubt about them. Coils need to be mounted perfectly flush with the machined edges of the mounting posts (insures the correct magnet air gap). You can check the magnets by dangling a small screwdriver in front of them -- likely fine, but doesn't hurt to check as part of the routine.

You can do a very basic spark check by spinning the flywheel clockwise by hand, plugs out. The flywheel doesn't need to be torqued down to do this (or bolted on, for that matter -- allows for checking and rechecking before reassembly). Following reassembly, measure the spark using an adjustable tester.

Do you know where the stator wire is? Or how to test the stator? Is there a separate forum, or link to that information?

I know its been a while since I have posted. Its because the boat and motor run good, I took them out on the Largest lake in Arizona. Lake Powell, man, had a on water cable adjustment of the (forward, neutral, reverse) now it shifts good, and gets fairly good speed, learned about tilt and trim on a boat. but what a experience. Man this boat is fun.
