I'm going to purchase a new 200hp HPDI motor. I'm looking at Merc, Yamaha and Evinrude. Evinrude is offering a 7 year warranty this year(show special). This seems great to me, but I've heard so much negative talk about Evinrudes. Is this true or just talk? A 7 year warranty is hard to pass up.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
Ed

FishinEd...just a personnal opinion...

The difference between the 2003 and their predicessors is like comparing night and day. Bombardier has taken the DI motors and has almost redesigned them. I don't think you will go wrong in going with an Rude.

'Course...that's just my opinion...I could be wrong....but I think not.

OBJim :D

The new Rudes are great motors, anybody out there that watches Ship Shape TV just saw a tour of the new factory and test facility very impressive! And with a 7 year warranty how can you go wrong?

Ditto on what Jim said.A 7 year warranty speaks for itself. If prices are comparable I'd go with the Rude also.

Re: Evinrude, Do they still have problems

Good morning!!
I'm purchasing a 2003 225hp Evinrude. Are you sure about the 7year warranty? They have the 3year full warranty. They are also giving you $7.00 per hp rebate. I'm getting back $1575.00.I'll have to check out the 7 year and is this a limited warranty after the 3year full warranty?? And is there an extra cost? The rebate is good from Dec.15 through April. :p My Ma & Pa dealer are holding mine till the end of March so that I don't loose any warranty sitting in my back yard.
Have a Great Day!!! :)

The 7 year deal is on DI motors (formally known as Ficht). The rebate per HP is on carb'd motors as I understand it, with a 4 year warranty.

What a deal!

Re: Evinrude, Do they still have problems

Not to throw a wrench in it, but why would you buy a HPDI outboard? Gambling man? :) We all know they've come a long way, but still have more than their share of problems. I can't see passing up a proven 200 hp 4-stroke or EFI 2-stroke for a HPDI.

A 7-year warranty is all fine and dandy, and shows support for their product. But 7 years won't do you much good when you're 50 miles offshore in 12-foot seas and have a breakdown. Warranty repair will be the least of your worries. ;)

If I was a gambling man I'd bet that the HPDI will have a problem before the others. IMO :)

FishinEd
The deal on the Evinrudes is a rebate, or additional warranty. The standard warranty on Evinrude is 3 years, if you buy within that Dec-Apr time period you get a rebate of $7 per HP, or if you don't take the rebate you get an additional 4 years of warranty for a total of 7years with a full coverage warranty. The first 3 yrs are from Bombardier and the additional 4 yrs are from another warranty company but with the same terms. There is a $25 or $50 deductible in the last three yrs. of the warranty. ;)
Forktail, have you heard of any problems with a 2002 or 2003 Evinrude?

Good evening!!! :p
I was  but now I'm on the right track.
go to www.evinrude.com click on news and look at warranties. On Evinrude Ficht you have a CHOICE of the rebate OR 7 year extented warranty. Now it did not say if you had to pay anything for that extra warranty. You will have to read between the lines.
Four dollars on Johnson outboards.
Forktail; I'm a gambling man. Also with my trade in on a 225hp my cost after rebate will be $4500.00 w/3year full warranty.
Also a four stroke may be quite at idle and trolling but they do make noise at crusing. Are you saying that four strokes are like the Maytag man??? :( If four strokes didn't break down, four stroke dealers would be out of business
For $99.00 SEA TOW will tow you from 50 miles straight out from your habor or 25miles up or down the coast.

Re: Evinrude, Do they still have problems

flyrod, by all means buy the Ficht if that's what you want. My opinions only reflect my experiences. I realize Bombi has made many improvements over the older problematic Ficht's. However, I personally don't feel comfortable with a technology that is under fast-paced development to address inherent problems, no matter how well those problems are addressed. I don't believe lean burn/lean oil 2-strokes have proven themselves as something to depend my life upon...yet.

I wasn't giving my suggestions based on noise, or Maytag reliability. Only my own experience with proven performance. Only time cures wounds....and I have a big one with the Ficht.

"If four strokes didn't break down, four stroke dealers would be out of business"

Actually it was the problematic Ficht, and its continued breakdowns that sunk OMC and its dealers. 4-stroke dealers (and 2-stroke dealers) stay in business because they sell outboards, not repair them. A dealership is usually lost by not selling the product...or not having buyers for that product. We know they all break down...but some more than others.

$99 Sea Tow? Are you serious? We have 30-foot tides here that run 10-15 knots. I need reliable power, thank you. :)

Forktail: Enjoy reading your posts :) very well written and well spoken ;) 30'tides? where do you live, Alaska? All ways wanted to fish Alaska, some day.
We have 9' tides at about 6knts. Sea tow around here is like triple AAA. $99.00 ayear is cheaper then $130.00 per hour from the time they leave the dock until they get back.
Have a great day!!! :D

Forktail,

I have to disagree with you on the demise of OMC. Ficht didn't sink them, bad management did.

That included, not exclusively, lousy to non existant quality control.

Re: Evinrude, Do they still have problems

I agree 100% djohns :) .

That remark didn't come out the way I intended. I was just making a point to flyrod that dealers don't stay in business by repairing broken outboards. They stay in business by selling them. Case and point...all the Ficht repairs in the world didn't keep OMC and their dealers alive. ;)
