That's the rewind pawl. and spring. Take those parts to any dealer, they can get it for you. There is also a metal "C" clip that holds that nylon pawl in place. That wire loop goes in the groove of that center hub, and there will be 2 wire strans going to the pawl. I don't have my year, and model guide with me but that looks like an early 60's rewind.

By the way the motor is a 1963 18hp Evinrude, I beleive the oil/fuel mix is 40:1 in case your wondering.

That is a good work horse of an engine. If your going to working on it your self you should get a service manual and owner manual/parts list. I picked up both on ebay fairly cheap. I broke the same part on mine about the 10th time I pulled. Got the part at a dealer no problem. I think 40/1 is a bit rich more likely 50/1.

mfbear, what does your manual for this motor tell you the fuel/oil mix should be? I'm pretty sure OMC specs called for 40:1.

All OMC engines built before 1964 should use a 24:1 mix, per OMC. That includes your '63 18HP.<br /><br />'64 and later engines use 50:1.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

Re: Evinrude Fastwin broken parts Qs

I am new at this whole boat thing, Im getting away from the car hobby a bit and realy enjoy fishing with the wife, we finaly after 9 years of marraige found something we both like. I plan on fixing whats not right on the boat, like some jerried up wiring, a few old knobs etc. Are parts still readily availble for these. I am kinda nervous about taking a boat out with such an old motor, Id hate to be in the middle of nowhere and the engine not run. I have a buddy who is going to machine a couple of those parts for me out of billet steel, to insure it wont break again. Ill be looking on ebay for manuals I guess, unless I can find one somewhere else. Thanks for the help guys. <br />Steve

steve i have at 1955 15hp evinrude the most dependable motor i have. 2 autos 4 boats 4 mowers. besure before you trailer it to disconnect the gas line, and allow the motor to run till it stops. this helps with the fuel system gumming up. i do every time and it starts 1st or 2nd pull. if you are not using it for a period of time turn it over about every 2 weeks atleast i pull in neutral, 1 in reverse, 1 in forward, keeps everything moving. thats how i've keep this one going.

Steve: You can have those parts made if you wish, but that nylon pawl is not really a troublesome item. If you want to make that engine trouble free, put in new points, condensors, coils, and a water pump. That will make that engine very reliable, and won't cost much. If you look at the parts on that rewind starter, you will notice that they are very light weight, and move very freely. They have to be that way so that pawl will instantly retract when the pull rope rewinds. That gets it out of the way of the flywheel when the engine starts. That 18 was a very basic design, and they seem to run forever.

The whole rewinder assy is the same on 72 - 73 20 and 25 HP. Im'n not satisfyed with the pawls either, whatefter I do, they only seem to last 15 - 20 years. Weak compared to motor . :D That rewins starter is designed by a genious. Notice the pulley is oval, designed so you pull with most torque, when pistons are at top of stroke, where most power is needed. Thats just one of the reasons I like Johnson/Evinrude that much, engineering and experience.

Well you guys have definitely made me feel better about my older motor. I will find a source for a manual and do the tuneup writen about above and give her a whirl. Im pretty non trusting so I think ill buy a couple of those pawls, just in case it breaks at the lake and have some tools handy also. Can these things be converted to electric start also? You guys are the best, and this is the nicest forum I have visited ever.<br />Steve

Re: Evinrude Fastwin broken parts Qs

Can you guys believe after all this time I finaly located one of these $10 parts, not from any local boat places, cause they wouldnt help me, but a nice old man had one in his garage and gave it to me. I had almost given this little boat away this week cause I couldnt use it. Lemme tell you, Waco Texas sucks and no one if courtious enough to even waste there time unless your spending thousands of dollars with them for a new outboard.

Anyone have a picture how the completed assembly looks? Mine broke on my new to me 1975 25 hp. Looks identical to this one.

Re: Evinrude Fastwin broken parts Qs

Hey Waco,
I'm sure you probably know this but just in case----- when you pull the starter rope, pull gently until you feel those pawls engage the flywheel, then give'er a good stout pull. Usually that's how they get broken...someone just jerks the heck out of it as soon as they grab the pull cord handle. Sometimes they're just old and brittle. I wouldn't worry about it happening again, though, as long as you wait till it engages the flywheel before you jerk it. If you follow the guys' advice above and replace the coils, impeller, carb kit, and possibly lower unit seals, that motor will be very easy to start and you probably won't even want an electric starter. The above parts amount to about 100 bucks and are well worth it.
Good luck, you have an EXCELLENT motor!
BTW--I love this forum, too. Learned a lot and still learning every time I get on.
Here's a pic of the pawls, but darn it, replace some of those other parts mentioned above, if you ask we'll even get you the part #'s so you can order 'em online and have 'em show up at your doorstep so you don't have to deal with those finicky dealerships.:):) Hope this helps...

I don't know if Waco is still around, but I appreciate your effort in posting those photos. A search of pawls or pawl will bring up what they look like broken, and how to put them back together. I was guessing without the experience of having seen them, and it was slightly different than I was expecting.

Re: Evinrude Fastwin broken parts Qs

FOLLOW UP: The pawl I got through NAPA was too tight to have the required "action". When you pull the rope, the pawl should snap into position. Drilled it, lubed it and it started too work.
