Re: Evinrude vs Mercury

Just a word on gas gauges, you can take it for what its worth. On my boat, I would run to "E" on the gauge and fill up at a station or a marina when that happened. I would always pump in just shy of 20 gallons leading me to believe for years I had a 20 gallon tank. Boy, was I surprised when I pulled up the hatch on the floor and dusted off the data plate on the tank. The actual fuel capacity is 43 gallons! My point, as you already may know is these gauges simply cannot be trusted

I can't read any info on my tank, already tried to go that rout.Next time i run it out i will take it to station an fill it to see what it holds!

If the cavitation plate is slightly below the transom at the keel, I don't think you need move the motor up on the transom.

The best explanation that I have heard for your low rpm issue, is the gear ratio situation. Frankly, I didn't pick up on that as a concern, because I don't fool with anything but old OMC outboards. It just didn't occur to me. Then again, that's why having all these experts at iboats is such a great situation.

Absent some problem that is causing your engine to develop less than full power, you seem to have a prop pitch problem that you must correct. Until you do, you are not going to get a reasonable view of what your motor should be burning in gas.

OK,Yesterday evening i moved the motor up 3 holes to start, went for a test drive, only gained about 300 rpm and 2 mph.Seemed to be slipping at WOT but couldn't tell for sure.So i moved the motor down 1 hole not a enough difference either way, only thing i noticed was that i could now trim the motor up a little more without bow hop,and it would slip more on turns.going snagging to day and will check fuel consumption to see if its any different?Still waiting on friend to get his boat out of storage so i can try his 17P prop.

If raising the motor got you 300 more rpms i think you are heading in the right direction...Try the 17 prop now and i bet it will be close..:)

If the motor is cavitating, you have it too high. Drop it one more hole and see what happens. I still think you are over-propped, though.

Boat seems to be doing good as far as cavitation after raising the motor,i decided to stay with raising it 2 holes.Gained maybe 200 rpm's but the boat rides better and doesn't bow hop like it did before,as for fuel consumption, it also helped that to.Still waiting on that prop though, will let you know.
