Re: F R- Can you answer this one?

So I figured out after looking at a diagram that is a bearing plate. After digging into the lower unit a little deeper I made some discoveries. The shift detents are both in tact, the shift rod was bent so I bent it back. All good now, the gears and dog look good so no gear worries. The shock absorber is indeed broken.

So I guess whoever owner this motor in a frustrated state hit a rock, shock broke , came up and hit the bearing plate and probably bent this shift rod all at the same time or after it broke tried shifting it. No wonder it wouldn't "go" anywhere.

How did you get that shock absorber apart??

I guess old age would cause fatigue. I still think a shear pin and a solid shaft it the better route but what can you do, I have to fix it and want to keep it original, thanks F R and everyone else for the advice and help, this site rocks!

I twisted it and it came apart, I think normally they don't when the spring is in tact.

After I posted earlier I went outside and seperated mine.. Took pics that look pretty much identical to yours and almost posted them but you beat me to it lol.. And yea its probably just plain old age causing these things to give.. I almost think piecing it together and having a good welder run a solid even bead around where the shock absorber pieces together so that it Doesn't spin at all and not bind on the inside of the lower unit would be a good idea and make a solid shaft

I tried the welding route. Didn't work. At least not for me. The welding heat and cooling distorted the part so that it was no longer aligned.

Well then I guess it a replacement part needed. Will the bearing plate and shock work from a 5.5 or are they different?

Thanks

Bearing plates and shocks were the same in all 5.5, 6 & 7.5 that they were used in. However, the seal was changed at some point. Makes no difference when replacing the whole plate, but if you are to order a seal you will have to get the right one according to what plate you have in there.

It wasn't a site, it was a guy on the www.aomci.org site who had a bunch of spare motor parts, I just emailed him directly. Besides that, I spoke to Steve (Samo_ott) and he lives a block away from my work, we worked out a deal for a lower unit.

BK,
If you can find out where Steve's "shed" is, and can get in there and put the 5 finger layaway on one of his '58 10 or 18hp outboards, we might can work out a deal on it.;)
I have a couple of 7.5's, but luckily haven't had the shock absorber problem---yet. It is definitely annoying to take off the powerhead, but if you want to really be peeved, try changing the water pump on a '54 big twin---they'll get you angry!

Bah, taking off the powerhead took all of 5 minutes and it's good to do it anyways to check the condition of the washer under the head. As far as Steve's shed is concerned, it's over in Quebec, I have Ontario plates, that's good for one speeding ticket on the 50 from the QPF. Steve will understand that one!

I changed the pump on a 64 big twin, piece of cake, I guess the 54 is a PITA.
