Woodonglass I can't thank you enough! It's people like you that gives this forum the reputation it has.
I spent all day getting a lot of that crap outta there, and for the most part I'm down to sanding, and prep work. I do have one or two more questions. but I need to post a few photos first, should be just a minute or two.

Sorry about the delay. Anyway can you tell me what kind of glass each of these are.

The thicker weave one is what the entire boat is made out of and I want to know if theres any special procedure to glassing over it, or will simply putting resin on it be enough?

The first looks to be about an 8- 10 oz cloth and the 2nd is 24 oz woven roving. Basically you just need to grind/sand it down till its fresh and clean, wipe it down with acetone and you'll be good to go.

So I'm still working on getting the title. The seller has been very friendly about getting the title, and this seems more like a simple legal issue than a question of liability.

I'm no lawyer, but I think I can have the seller sign a probate to release the title from his deceased grandfathers name, whom last registered the boat.

I also found out the Crosby is a 58, not 59.

Re: First boat, first restore. 59 Crosby (I think)

For those who have been following along, I do appreciate it. I haven't really had too much of an opportunity to work on the Crosby as work has been getting in the way. which isn't necessarily a bad thing as it will pay for the up coming fiberglass work/purchases I need to make. I have been grinding and sanding and preparing all the existing fiberglass, (what little that is left) for the new fiber glass. (Pictures to come, please be patient) Anyway as I was pulling out the old floor I noticed that the transom was wet as well. Wet, is kind of putting it mildly, lets say water logged. IMO it can probably be salvaged, but if I'm going to be spending 1k + on fiberglass alone, I don't want one simple act of laziness come back to bite me 5+ years down the road. So you will see photos of that replacement as well.

I will have photos of an up to date progress tomorrow, until then happy boating.

Best of luck getting the legal side taken care of...
Life will always be getting in the way, sometimes for good, other times, not so much, but like you said, the dreaded work part helps to feed the money bush for our projects...
I am pleased to hear that you are taking a realistic approach to your restoration...somewhat like the old saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a Pound of cure"...taking care of everything that the boat needs now, while you are there, will pay huge dividends down the road...
Trust me when I tell you, it will take more time than you first imagine...I initially thought I would be back in the water by now and I am slowly creeping up on my second year...heck, some guys here have started their restos way before I did and are still at it...so, don't fret...stick with it, get a little bit done every chance you can and you will get there...
We'll hang around...;):D

Momma said, "If it's worth doin, it's worth doin RIGHT!" In the end you'll have a boat better than factory, that your Grandkids will be able to enjoy and take pride in knowing the GrandPops did a heck of a job restoring it.

Re: First boat, first restore. 59 Crosby (I think)

Thank you guys for the support, you are awesome.

Yeah I'm still dealing with the legal side of things and has proven to be an excruciating process. Just to keep you informed, the Crosby is registered in the grandfathers name whom is no longer alive. The son wants nothing to do with it and grandson is the one whom gave it to me. I guess it has to go through the state probate because the boat was not in the will.:frusty: :ballchain:

Anyway I've become attached to the boat and am crazy enough to go through the process, so thank you GT, I might need that good luck.

It's funny WOG my mother used to say the exact same saying to me and has become my motto as well. And Thank you, I can only hope my grand children get to use it ;)

I'm in the process of checking out some of your stuff too. Amazing work yourself my friend.

Re: First boat, first restore. 59 Crosby (I think)

Hey guys its been over a month since I last posted, but with much regret I can't get the title in my name. I have tried and pleaded with everyone I could to try to get the boat in my name and it turns out to be a loss. All I have now is just a life lesson to show for my efforts. I apologize to everyone following this thread, I had every intention on doing a full restore but I can not make an investment like that without having the title in my name. I want to thank everyone for their support, and apologize for the disappointment. I'm not one to give up, but sometimes in life you have to cut your losses. I do plan on staying on the forums and learning and becoming friends with all the members i can on here. However, when I do a restore it will be with a title and a different boat. I promise this will be the only non starter thread I ever start, that I promise.

I haven't a clue what RI requires, but if it's registered in your name in another state, can you get a hull ID # issued by RI & get a title?

All may not be lost.......

No apologies necessary..
Sorry to hear about the title.. Like GT1M said, better to found out now than latter..
I see people advertize on CL that say they can get a title for any boat, but I have never dealt with any of them..
Could be a rip off..
Good luck in whatever you do..

Telling of your experiences--whether the boat gets titled or rebuilt or whatever, is helpful to all of us. No need to apologize. I also started on my resto without the title. Got the boat last August and got yhr title last month. Best to you.

Re: First boat, first restore. 59 Crosby (I think)

Thank you guys for your support, just as suspected you guys are pretty much awesome. Anyway I decided to cut my losses and save my $ for exactly what I want, a boat with a TITLE! :der: I am jotting this down as a lesson learned. I have since given the boat away to a couple of guys on CL whom I reassured that they needed a title, but took the boat anyway. So I drowned my sorrows and will be checking the forums for any ideas that anyone might have as to recommendations on what types of boats to avoid vs. search for.
