Making sure you realize a 3.0 is a 4 cylinder. So if he thinks a 6 cylinder would labor a 4 definitely will be way underpowered.

Oops, I was thinking of the 4.3. Yes, I believe a 4 cylinder would be very under-powered, the 4.3 would probably be ok, but not great.

Re: First boat help

I was going to make a comment about it not being that heavy. But Nada guides says that a 93 Crownline 182BR is a full 800lbs heavier than my old 19ft Bayliner. That does seem like a lot of weight to be pushing around with a 21 year old 3.0L engine.

That's good info. Just wondering why they would under power it. Is there anyone out there running a 3 liter? How do they do? For a 17 to 18 foot boat what is the most common engine?

They under-power them to keep the price tag down. Will it get you from point A to point B, yes, will you be pulling a slalom skier out of the hole with 5 people in the boat, no way.

Re: First boat help

My parents have a Bayliner (Capri, I think) 19 with a 3.0 / 140 Merc. For run-of-the-mill skiing (3 adults in the boat) or cruising (with several people on board - say, 5 adults) it runs fine. No one's going to write songs about it, but it'll hold high 30's.

My 2005 195 with 3.0L would do 43MPH properly trimmed with 4 people in the boat. I skied behind it all the time, only real downside was the lack of power out of the hole.

Ok, that's good to hear. Low 40's is a good bit better than what I got now low 30's lol. I noticed that that the 2005 195 is about 500 lb. lighter than 1993 182.
Would I be wrong in assuming that the Crownline have about the same speed as my 50 horse Bayliner? Just a much better ride.

Re: First boat help

There are several sources for windshields. Here are a couple:
iboats has lots of windshield parts.
Great lakes skipper
There are many on ebay
Taylor Made systems will repair them or fabricate parts.

If you have a boat you are happy with, in good mechanical condition, that doesn't need a full restore, it may well be worth doing a few repairs to keep it going.

Re: First boat help

I've still been doing research, I found a 1997 Four Winns QX with a 4.3 liter. Assuming that it is in good condition.
From what I'm hearing, I think, having the 4.3 the boat will be a little more responsive. And gph will be about the same?

Any thoughts on older Four Winns.

Ok, hears a thought, what is the "proverbial Toyota" of the boating world. You know, the one you can't kill? Is there such a thing?

I have a 1993 Four Winns Horizon 190 LE with a 5.0L Cobra, and I love it.

But that said, OMC has been out of business since 93. The 97 with the Volvo drive should be easier getting parts.

pckeen, thank you for the good info on the windshield. Yes, I have a decent boat in pretty good condition. I think if I can get the windshield fixed I will be happier with it. Funny how that works.

There really isn't one since they all use the same powertrains. In terms of the most indestructible type - an aluminum runabout is harder to really mess up than a fiberglass/wood boat.

Well that's to bad, that would have made life easier. Best boat is blank. Pick the style you want. Lol

I would be willing to wager that a 3.0 burns less fuel than a 2 stroke 50hp. In a a boat light enough for them to push they are great motors.

Re: First boat help

The following link is a mercruiser test of a fuel injected 3.0, so the numbers will be a little better than carburated

Engine Test | Mercury Marine

You will have a hard time finding fuel usage data for your 50hp force but the following thread was discussing you engine and mileage

http://forums.iboats.com/force-chrysler-outboards/50hp-force-fuel-consumption-438351.html

I have a 3.0 in my 19' bowrider which is a light boat for it's size but it is very easy on fuel. I use it alot for wakeboarding but between taking breaks and switching riders we probably are only running hard for about 3-4 hours in a full day of riding. I have never put more than 15 gallons in the boat for a day's usage. I'm certain I could burn more if I really tried but in my experience it just doesn't use much gas.
It is also far from the perfect wakeboat but it is good enough for me and a vast improvement over a 17' with a 50hp outboard.

JB, what s the verdict? What did you do?

Just as a comparison, I have a 1996 Crownline 182BR with the 4.3 Merc. I stayed away from the 3.0 equipped boats as I think they are underpowered. I am glad I bought one with a 4.3 because it has no issues with power. Had 5-6 adults in boat and it gets up on plane very quickly. it is a heavy boat to tow, but I like the quality and looks of it a lot.
