Because of my work schedule, I have been only able to go out in Sarasota Bay after the afternoon thunderstorms are over. Lately the fishing has been poor. Do the storms slow things down, or is it just a coincidence?

never fished the bay, but it sure slows down the<br />bite up north. gotta believe same holds true for<br />all fishin', but u never know. have caught some<br />big fish in stormy weather myself.

In Mobile Bay, it dosn't seem to affect it much. Fishing has not been good here, either, but I think it's because of a long dry spell that has kept most of the bait still up in the river marshes.

If you are on the lake just before the storm hits you need to bring a tennis racket to knock the fish out of your boat. After the storm for a little while the bite is still on but after an hour and for the next day or two fishing is usually terrible.

fish detect approaching storms (and cold fronts)due to their sensitivity to changes in barometric pressure. Knowing that a storm will disrupt the normal habits of their forage, they go on a binge in preparation of the coming fast. Plus which, wind and rain lower the amount of light that can penetrate the surface, and obscure their view of your boat.<br /><br />that's the theory, anyway, and it makes a good excuse. :) <br /><br />"...to women who do not fish, men who come home without their limit are failures in life."<br />--Norman MacLean, A River Runs Through It

Hey Jtexas; walked down to Lake Arlington today and threw a chartruese road runner out a few times. caught a 12 inch sandie on the fall. then got hung up in the dadblamed wire mesh that holds the rocks in. fairly shallow water in the grass is where he was. only fished about 15 minutes before getting hung up. didn't carry any other bait down.

Black Bass I would say the bite turns off with a approching cold front. Fished several Tournaments when an approching storm came thru and most boate did not even have limits, and very few did any culling.<br /><br />Catfish have had good luck right after the storm passes and the water starts to rise. My theroy is lots of worms and other bugs get washed into the water.

My experience Tuesday...We went to Texoma in the rain to bank fish. The water was roiled and muddy from bank to about 30 feet out. We seined the muddy water and got ghost minnows and shad. We baited and chunked out past the muddy zone and every cast was a fish...bass, catfish, sandbass, striper, drum, big bream...we caught them all. We got buck fever when big fish popped our 12 pound line like sewing thread. I cant remember tying a decent knot after that. We had about 50 fish flopping on the bank, a lot got back in the water but nobody would stop to string them up. My biggest was a 15 pound striper. We were soaked to the gills. This was around 10:00 AM. We fished til noon and the bite slowed down but never stopped completely. We gathered up and left with a pickup bed loaded with fish. I love to fish in a rainstorm, but sometimes its tough to get somebody to go to help seine bait. Chunk

hey Chunk, gotta love it when that happens. I would guess you musta been below the dam - was a lot of water coming over the spillway? that'll make for good fishing regardless of weather.
