float level

working on a 1963 18hp evinrude. got a kit from dealer that came with float. seems like i remember seeing a post by joe reeves that said float would not be level with carb body but a little higher at one end. can someone confirm this? i can't find his post and i'm almost ready to put this carb back together. also what is the best way to remove the plug on top. do i need a sealer on the new plug <br /><br />had a lot of leftover stuff in that kit too. i assume that is normal since i put back exactly as i have removed up to this point. thanks in advance

With the float bowl upside down the float should sit parallel with the carb body, bend the metal tab gently to achieve this.<br />By "plug", do you mean the soft aluminium disc one? It doesn't need sealer, just place the new one in the hole convex (domed) side up, and tap it in the middle with a punch to flatten it.<br />The carb kit probably fits several different carbs, hence the leftovers.

not sure if that was the exact post but it sounds like what i remember reading. <br /><br />petrol, how do i get the old one out without screwing something up. i had considered drilling a small hole and screwing a small screw in it to pull it. i'm afraid of damaging something if i drill into it though.<br /><br />sorry, forgot to add thanks for the replies

I just tapped mine with a punch until it was concave, then picked it out with a small flat screwdriver, it came out easily.

Drill a 1/8 inch hole through the soft plug, being careful to let the drill just break through. Place a sharp punch through 1/8" hole, and pry up to remove. Replace with a flat faced punch that is as close to the diameter of the core plug that you can find. If done properly, you don't need sealer, but sealer makes good insurance.
