Ok I understand the CORRECT way to do this [replace top bearing and race] is to take the top end apart. But as a person that has been outa work over a year and cant afford to pay attention. I am lookn' to cut corners. Looking at the pics I cant understand why the whole thing has to come apart. Why cant a person use a bearing puller to yank the bearing while leaving the shaft installed, and tap on a new one, and a little slide hammer to yank the race. Can someone plz 'splain why that wouldnt work ? What am I missing ? Thx

As I said in earlier post ... the gear oil is mint and the drain plug magnet sterile of metal.

I would use Merc bearings and replace/ reuse the shims under the race

I guess I kinda answered my own question by rereading Dons earlier post. All about torque and shims I guess But damn It seams like it shouldnt have to be so involved

The main issue is that you would not know the preload on the bearing. It could be ok, but you're taking a big chance. You really need a press to remove the bearing from the shaft, it is pressed on tight. To set the preload correctly, you need to remove the seal at the bottom of the shaft.
