Re: for the real smart I boats people

milo, I am not the brightest bulb in the pack, but I will take a shot at it.

Now follow along and I will explain it to you.

In nature, living things evolve through changes in their DNA. In an animal like a chicken, DNA from a male sperm cell and a female ovum meet and combine to form a zygote -- the first cell of a new baby chicken.

This first cell divides innumerable times to form all of the cells of the complete animal. In any animal, every cell contains exactly the same DNA, and that DNA comes from the zygote.

Chickens evolved from non-chickens through small changes caused by the mixing of male and female DNA or by mutations to the DNA that produced the zygote.

These changes and mutations only have an effect at the point where a new zygote is created.

That is, two non-chickens mated and the DNA in their new zygote contained the mutation(s) that produced the first true chicken. That one zygote cell divided to produce the first true chicken.

Prior to that first true chicken zygote, there were only non-chickens. The zygote cell is the only place where DNA mutations could produce a new animal, and the zygote cell is housed in the chicken's egg.

So, the egg must have come first.

Hope you understood that. :)

Have to agree. Makes complete sense. Who knew SBN was a biologist or a geneticist?

When a chicken hatches from the egg it contains every egg it will ever lay in its system.

THE EGG SHELL that forms around the yolk is calcified egg whites

Re: for the real smart I boats people

Yes milo, calcium carbonate, is what makes up the egg shell as I will explain.

In yet another absolutely amazing display of nature's prowess, the contents of the egg are wrapped in a perfect, seamless, incredibly strong shell as though by magic! Eggs are objects of art.

It turns out the chicken has little to do with the formation of an egg's shell -- the egg actually grows the shell around itself! It does this using processes that are also seen in bones and seashells.

Around the egg is a membrane, and evenly spaced on the membrane are points where columns of calcite (a form of calcium carbonate) form. These columns stack together side by side to form the shell.

The nucleation points are defined protein nodules called mammillary protrusions, and the mineral is first deposited as particles of aragonite with random orientation of the crystal planes. On top of these aragonite piles, columns of oriented crystalline calcite begin to grow upward.
The calcite is basically floating in solution around the shell, and it deposits on the shell like a forming crystal. The egg grows its own shell!

Re: for the real smart I boats people

yes lakeman it does, about 4,000 tiny ova from which the yolks are made, but only after the hen matures.

Unlike most females, the hen only has one active ovary.
The right one quits developing when she is born and the left one is the one that carrys all the little ova(yolks).

Re: for the real smart I boats people

SBN, I did not know those facts about chickens. That is cool.

One comment about bones. Bones are slightly different than a chicken shell. While they do calcify and are hard, they also are living tissue. They have osteons that are cells within the bones. Bones are constantly being eaten away and remade by cells called Osteoclasts (eaten away portion)and Osteoblasts(creating more bone. In this way your bones can strengten as a direct response to physical stresses on the bones. Of course, this system can go awry and weaken the bones as in the case of Osetoporosis.

When a fetus, cartilage models of your bones are formed. These models are replaced with bone by the osteoblasts which lay down the mineral structure.

Because of this constant process, you can actually tell what age someone is by taking a cross section of a human femur (thigh bone)and counting the number of osteons and partial osteons
