As a former egghead myself, I applaud SBNs eggcellent eggsplanation, he is eggactly correct, if a bit eggcessive in eggsploring eggstraneous eggsamples of his eggstreme knowledge of eggs.<br /><br />His eggshaustive knowledge should eggspel the notion that hicks from the sticks egghibit minimal mental eggstention beyond badmouthing eggspensive beer and eggsperiments that eggsplode all over the outhouse walls ... <br /><br />I eggspect he was merely trying to eggspand your knowledge; for that he should be named iboats Egg Eggspert of the Year!!<br /><br />Woo hoo! (also, an easier explanation is that genetic mixing occurs during meiosis, (when the DNA from both parents start dancing, and do The Twist ... (sounds better than do The Double Helix! } which would eggsplicitly confirm the egg first paradigm<br /><br />

Have to agree with SBN, that the mutation that made the chicken slightly different from its parents occurred in the egg, but, the ability to reproduce is a definition of life, and it goes back in a continuous line to the beginning, and that beginning would be a parent and not the offspring.

Yes MY, she will.<br />When she is born/hatched, her left ovary keeps forming and holds up to 4,000 ova, thats the stuff that makes the yolk/chick.<br /><br />When she matures they will drop into her ovary tract which is about 2 feet long for 24 hours.<br />Thats how long it takes for a egg to form, reguardless if there is a rooster or not and then she lays it.<br /><br />She has to, to make room for the next one.

To add just a little more to mellowyellow's question.<br /><br />The rooster deposits a sperm sack which the hen then meters off to the eggs when they drop down.<br /><br />The eggs taste the same whether they are fertile or not.

SBN, the sperm gets in before the shell is formed I take it. So is it a tiny cellular sized egg that is fertilized then wrapped in yolk, egg white, and shell in the staging area?

Yes sco, when the egg is dropped into the "staging area", she then meters off some sperm to it before it starts forming it's shell.

here is something I stole from a web site! TRY TO FIGURE IT OUT!!!<br /><br />Jane is left at an orphanage as a foundling. When Jane is a teenager she falls in love with a drifter who abandons her but leaves her pregnant. Then disaster strikes. She almost dies giving birth to a baby girl who is then mysteriously kidnapped. The doctors find that Jane is bleeding badly but oddly enough has both sex organs. So to save her life the doctors convert Jane to Jim. Jim subsequently becomes a roaring drunk until he meets a friendly bartender who wisks Jim back way into the past. Jim meets a beautiful teenage girl and accidentally gets her pregnant with a baby girl. Out of guilt he kidnaps the baby girl and drops her off at the orphanage. Later Jim joins the time travelers corps leads a distinguished life and has one last dream to disguise himself as a bartender to meet a certain drunk named Jim in the past. Question: who is Jane's mother, father, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother, and grandchild? <br /><br />Yea... thats like the ultimate chicken/egg riddle.
