I've lurked around your forum for sometime and found several helpful hints over the years, so figured I'd better join officially and not only get some advice on this issue, but share the solution with some other folks as well.

I'm dealing with my 120 Mercury Force (1999 model), hung on my 18' Bayliner Capri. I live in Macon, GA.

Background: The boat has been sitting unused since June 2012. Gas tank was about 98% empty (my bad...), so I already suspect condensation problems. Put the earmuffs on - the engine will start after many attempts, but only run nearly wide open throttle, and stumbles badly, spewing oil and smoke. Absolutely won't idle. Had issues with the idle mixture settings last summer - mainly because i messed with them without the manual. This was fixed and it ran fine when i put it up end of last June.

What I've done so far: filled up with fresh gas, added Heet gas additive to remove moisture, cleaned plugs (not fouled), checked fuel filter (ok). I thinned out the oil mixture a bit thinking that maybe the engine had picked up excess oil sludge in the bottom of the tank, and maybe I had added too much oil the last time i used it. That seemed to help with the oil spewing and smoking, but still runs rough. Took it to the lake for a two hour ride. Runs fine at 5K RPM (wide open). Stumbles at any other throttle setting. From startup, you have to rev the engine, throw it into gear and firewall it - it eventually takes off like a striped ape. Then you can't throttle back to a reasonable speed - you just have to endure the skipping etc.

Next steps: going to watch the Carb & Timing Tutorial on You Tube! then clean out the carbs and check the fuel pump diaphragm.

Would appreciate any advise you can give me since I'm hooking up and heading to FLA on Saturday. I'll share results with everyone. thanks!

By stumbling what do you mean? Does the motor miss, like it may occasionally not be getting a spark on one of the cylinders. Or is the boat surging, like the boat is going along fine then it seems it may jump to neutral than back to forward?

Try a portable tank of fresh gas/oil mix to eliminate the engine as the problem.

it does seem to miss at times, other times, it seems to be just starving for fuel. it doesn't surge, but it will be going along fine and then just start dropping back like it's not getting fuel. hope this helps, and thanks!

will give that a try. what about using carb cleaner in the portable fuel mix? thanks

Okay, based on what you are saying it seems to be an ignition and fuel problem. Have you done a tune-up on the motor since you've had it? If it were my motor, I would do as foodfisher stated. If that does not fix the problem, I would check the ignition system, rebuild the carbs, and time the motor.

To me it seems odd that the motor runs fine at full throttle and not so well at every other throttle setting.

Thanks - sounds more and more like that's where the problem is.

I had the same problem with my Force 120 at one time. The gaskets on top of the float bowls on the carbs had dry rotted.I replace those and the motor ran fine. but mine was doing the same it was like it was starving for fuel til I reached wot then it ran fine.Does your primer bulb get hard? How many turns from lightly seated are your idle mixture screws? I would for certain check the timing and take the carbs off and check the needles and clean the carbs.and check all the fuel lines for cracks or loose lines were they connect on the fittings.

I have the same exact problem with my force 85hp right now. This is definitely a fuel problem. Check carbs, make sure your fuel pump housing is seated tight, also chck fuel filters. I narrowed my problem down to gaskets on the fuel pump housing and inlets on the carbs were clogged.
A little sea foam will go av long way to... Good luck

Re: Force 120 Stumbles - Runs Fine Wide Open

Update - I did run a gallon of clean fuel with carb cleaner additive through it just now (thanks foodfisher) and there was some improvement: It will now 'almost' idle without shutting down, and runs completely smooth just past idle, then as you advance the throttle, i get the stumbling (misfiring?) and smoke and surging. I don't believe it will actually go WOT without choking down tho.

Thanks to 1NewBoatGuy and Qualls for the new suggestions, will try that. Thanks to everyone. more to come!

Yes, primer gets hard, but it seems to leak down if you know what i mean (I replaced it and the pump lines last year). i adjusted idle mix screws last summer exactly per the Clymer manual so don't believe that's it. Thanks

Sea Foam is a waste of money so don't worry with becoming familiar with it, lol!!

Sea foam additive will keep your engine decarbed. Deep Creep (sea foam areosol) will help with the initial decarb. Been there done that, it works. IMHO

That was just in defence of sea foam. Have you cleaned your plugs, cleaned out the fuel recirculation system, adjusted your idle speed properly?

Mercury's Power Tune or OMC's Engine Tuner, both are the same product,
work 100% better than Sea Foam!
