Ok, here is a very dumb question.
I have this 1993 Force 40 hp with T&T. The motor is now in the bottom position. when I try to lift it, I can hear the pump running, but it moves only maybe 1 inch up. My first point of attack is to check the oil level and add if necessary. In manual it says that I need to trim it all the way up and then check the oil. Question is how can I get it up when it does not want to get up (please no Viagra answers :) )?
I can manually lift it up, but it really resists it. So I was thinking about lifting it up and resting it on 2x4 or something, so i can add some oil to it.

PS. This is a new-to-me motor, and PO said T&T was working just needed some oil added to it.

Yes you can assist it by lifting while someone else presses the button.
Rest it on something sturdy, like an upside down trash can, you don't want it falling down while your hands are in there.

I always wonder why the PO just doesn't take care if these little things.

How do they know it just needs oil?

Are they trying to hide something?

And if someone tries to tell you that it needs to be down to fill, they are wrong. Many (most) motors need to be down to fill, but yours needs to be raised.

Re: Force 40 hp Tilt and Trim

Well, the PO sold me the motor as "non running" and it came with the boat. He did not use it this year, but sid T&T was working last time he used it, but since he concidered the motor as junk he did not do anything to T&T. But I managed to get it going, so now I am against T&T.

I will do it over the weekend. Thanks roscoe, you have been extremely helpful.

contrary to popular belief among people who are selling boats ... trim fluid does not evaporate. There is no such thing as "all it needs is some fluid". If nothing else was wrong then it would still be full.

Do not overtighten the nylon release valve (if you have one). It does not need to be tight. It only needs to be snug. Same with filler cap. I don't think your year has a debris filter so be extra careful with that too.

Agree, oil does not evaporate, but it leaks out. PO said that it leaked out during winter month, when the boat was stored in non heated garage. He said something about the top cap unscrewing due to the frost.
Anyways for me thecheapest way to test his word is to add some oil.

Re: Force 40 hp Tilt and Trim

Just wanted to post the update since I hate posts taht nobody knows how was it resolved.
Well I lifted the motor up by hand, supported it with 2x4, opened the oil plug .... and it was empty, completely empty, I could see the bottom. So I filled it up, closed the cap, removed 2x4, lowered the motor by hand and ....... nothing happened, the pump was running again and motor was not moving. So I did it agaian, lifted the motor, supported it and removed the plug. Empty again , again COMPLETELY empty. So I added more oil, replaced the plug and viola, T&T now works. Now I need to figure out where does the oil go. But that can be easier, since usually oil leaved the puddle when it leaks out.
So fat it sat for 2 days and nothing leaked. Mystery.

Do you have the single ram system with pump clomped onto side of ram? Or do you have tubes?

The tube systems go dry if somebody unscrews a tube.
The mariner style systems go dry if you unscrew the nylon release valve or put in a new motor.

Otherwise it takes a malfunction for the system to go dry.

It looks to me like a single ram system. This is new to me motor, and I do not know waht PO did to it.

Re: Force 40 hp Tilt and Trim

it is normal for them to run dry a few times during an initial fill. If PO put on a new motor then you would notice shiny new paint. If he took out manual release plug then you would see tool marks on the nylon. Either of those two things can make a system go dry without anything being wrong.
