Hello
I have a 1989 Force 85HP, noticed water in my last gear lube change, when inspecting the gear case I see a hole, please see pictures, this is a hole approximately 3mm diameter, I noticed some oil coming through but I'm not sure if having that hole in that place will actually cause a leak or the oil is coming from somewhere else.
I'm planning to seal the hole with JB weld, but still I think the water leak is caused by the seals as when I did the lube change I still ran the motor for about two hours and the oil was contaminated by water but not much, I think that if a 3mm hole is actually leaking I would expect all oil to go out and completely fill with water.
Please let me know if this hole is normal or should be sealed and if based in this explanation you think seals are damaged.

Thanks

I think that hole was put in at the factory.------It may well be for the speedometer pressure.----No need tp plug it.-----You need to pressure test the gearcase to find the actual leak point !!!

IF???? you have the drive that came with the motor, the 89 didn't have the speedo hookup through the front of the drive. That came later when Mercury started influencing the design.
They did have a hole so water/gunk would drain out.
Do a pressure test.
It did have the rubber bellows/seal for the shift rod(worst setup, EVER).
They leaked and aren't made anymore.
The bottom drain plug on some models was an allen head set screw that leaked/weeped, no matter what you did.
Pics of the top/sides?

Thanks for your reply, I believe this has the original drive, after I posted this I was able to find another thread were somebody else described the issue perfectly, when filling up the case I noticed no leaks anywhere, the motor rested a full night before taking it to the lake and it showed no leaks or any signs of oil in the floor, after I ran it for about two hours and take it home I noticed some oil coming from the hole, so I'm thinking about seal issues.
I tried doing pressure test, I attached an old bike tube valve to the hose and connector of a lube pump, I was able to make it air tight so I think that works. I'm connecting this to the fill hole and using a bike tire pump, I'm not able to get any pressure, I'm thinking either I'm not sealing well on the fill hole or there is a very big loss some were, I didn't add yet soap foam I was just trying this late last night but I will do this week end. BTW I also tried sealing the hole in the front of the drive with my finger to see if there was any difference but I couldn't notice any.
Any advise on how to seal the plug to the fill hole, based on your experience using the hose and connector of the lube pump will work? Also using the fill hole is correct or should I try through the drain hole?

I will take some more pictures this night of the motor leg and the device I made for pressure test.

Thanks

Thanks

You should have 3 places to fill/ vent on your drive.
Make sure the plugs are in right.
I use an air pump from Ryobi. It has a fitting that fits right into the fill/vent hole.1648211120063.png
