I have a 85 hp force outboard. It barely cranks with the spark plugs in but cranks fine when the spark plugs are out any idea why this is or how to fix it?

Make sure the battery is hot. Then do a compression test.Comp should be close.Any more than 10-15# difference will cause hard starting. If that is ok,then check the starter for dirty contacts.J

if your battery is fully charged, all cable connections good, then your starter is probably in need of brushes, or replacement. with the plugs out there is no load and will spin like crazy, but with plugs in the load in spinning the flywheel is greatly increased with the engine compression, so a weak battery, bad connects or bad starter will cause the problem good luck don

I agree with chitown. Check your battery voltage and connections. If all is good it's probably your starter
