Fuel/Oil Mix- SAE30vsTCW

OK first of all, I'm pretty new to boating, I was raised on the Alberta prairies and recently moved to BC. In the process, I inherited a 16' 1965 Crestliner with a '73 Johnson 85hp motor.

Now on to my question.....
I read SOMEWHERE that you can use either SAE30 or TCW type oil for the fuel mix. I have just mixed up 2-5 gallon tanks with a 50:1 mix of SAE30 and hope that won't do any damage. I have also bought a gallon of TCW type 2 stroke oil and plan on using it from now on from other things I have read.

With the cost of gas... is the SAE30 mix OK for 10 gallons or should I doctor it up somehow so I don't do any damage. I haven't run yet on these tanks.

Remember, this is a 35 year old motor so it doesn't need the same standards as todays...

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm kinda new to this stuff too but I would never consider running motor oil for any length of time in a 2 stroke motor. The main issue is carbon buildup and I don't think running it once in an older motor would hurt but extended use??? I just wouldn't do it.... Run some sea foam and buy the good stuff.

Back in the days of old. SAE30 meant Non Detergent SAE 30.uaually at 24:1. The in 64 it was switched to 50:1 and an outboard oil was recommended. A couple of years, and many warranty claims later OMC introduced their own brand of tcw speced oil.

Now A 1973 engine has a requirement to use a tcw oil, since tcw has been superceded by tcw-2 and tcw-3 you should use the newest oils. Todays gas is much different for the gas in the 70s and the newer oils are designed to help keep carbon buildup at managable levels, regardless of year. Actuallly that 35 year old motor probably has a higher compression ratio and more spark advace than motors made 25 yrs later.

BTW Wecome to iboats

Used that in motorcycles in years gone by !!!!!
It worked for us but the oil will seperate from the gas and need a good shake around to re-mix it. I would however not do this to an outboard.
To save wasting the fuel why dont you put a couple of gallons at a time into a full tank of gas in the car ??? a bit of oil will not hurt and will actually act as an upper cylinder lubricant. I have used 2 stroke mix that is left at the end of the season that way for many years in the lawnmower's etc.

BUT, I would not use it for the outboard. TCW-3 is the only way to go.
In my opinion that is.

Welcome to iboats!

Not only is the newer TCW-3 oil better for your motor, i.e. less carbon build up, it is also better for the water we boat in. It is designed to be biodegradable in the water at a rate of 80% in 20 days.

If you don't do it for your motor, do it for the fish we eat & the plants they need for a happy life, or do it for me, and your kids that swim in the water. :D

TCW-2 won't degrade in water, as the TCW-3 oil does.

This information was supplied to me by the manufacture of one TCW-2/TCW-3 brand.

It only cost slightly more, go for the good stuff.

He only wants to use up the 10 gallons.sae 30 was used for probably 50 years or more and was adequate.add a little sea foam and mix at 24:1 and your golden when its used up go to the TCW3 rated oil.Going to be pretty smokey.

Re: Fuel/Oil Mix- SAE30vsTCW

Well, I didn't see the replies in time before I went out yesterday, so here's what I did...
The regular mix for my 22 litre tank is 16 oz at 50:1 which is what I mixed my non-detergent SAE30 oil at.
I then added another 10oz of TCW-3 oil just to be safe.
It'll run a little rich, but at least I won't seize the motor. (yeah, it was pretty smokey until it warmed up)
Once I have gone through these 2 tanks (which unfortunately won't take long) I'll run the seafoam through it.
The motor is due for a minor tune and oil change anyway, so the plugs will be cleaned up then too.

Thanks for the replies. It's great to have a broad base of knowledge to draw from.

Now that I have that sorted out, (mostly)
I also have a 1955 5 hp motor that says to mix at 24:1 (I think that was SAE30 non-det as well).
If I run TCW-3 in it, what ratio should that be mixed at?
It looks like it could be run at 50:1 but I wouldn't risk it without someone confirming that.

Some older motors need the orginal mixtures, regardless of the type of oil, it depends upon the bearings, and piston boss's. If the motor is "full jeweled" then 50:1 should be ok. Other wise if it has brass inserts etc, then it needs the extra lubrication of 24:1

you still use the same ratio with TC-W3 as you would 30 wt. in the older motors, the TC-W3 smokes less, and pollutes less.
