Re: Future Hot Rod

The forces from a typical jet are transferred through the bottom not the transom. There are a lot of light layup high MPH jet boats out there with nothing but a glass transom and that is not very thick. Jets a re a completely different animal. it takes a lot of torque and HP to make a jet fast. That jet 86 is using is designed for a much smaller, much lighter craft. I hope it works for him but I'm afraid it just isn't enough. There are plenty of boats like his around with 350 HP plus V8s and a pump that moves twice the water of that ski pump and they are barely capable of 50 MPH.

All that being said. It is a cool project. I love it when people try something out of the box. I will be watching progress on this one for sure. We will probably all learn something from a project like this.

What about twin jet-ski drives? Would allow much more water displacement.

Re: Future Hot Rod

Thank's oops the hull 16' and built real lite only about half the thickness of some of the '70's junkers i have cut up.

The pump if out off of '99 Yamaha gp1200 155mm one of the larger ski pumps. The ski had 155hp and weighed 550# dry i think. Has seen top speeds reported of 65-70mph with stock eng and pump.

I am not sure what the hull weighs but can't be much over that total with no floor or power. So time i get her all decked out maybe 1000# total so 2/3 the speed if that with close to 200hp.

Now all i need to do is find 200hp in a light package.

That was the first jet idea twin 550's. It would have set the pumps to wide putting the intake greats about 6'' above the keel. I didn't think that would have worked to well but who knows if this one doesn't work out we may try it.
