aluminum is too soft and bends on you over time, last time I looked walmart still sold the brass ones that clamp tight.

I take it this is a threaded drain? If so there is nothing wrong with a plastic plug. It will not rust, corrode, or fall out. Buy a couple at any home improvement store. They are cheap.

Threaded plug? They do make stainless steel plugs, this I know because I found one in a bucket of fittings at work one day. Stainless and aluminum are very compatible, especialy in fresh water

I've got a 1986 Crestliner Nordic 18. It has the nylon (plastic) drain and plug. I would keep a spare good plug. You may need to buy the garboard drain complete to get a plug, maybe not. I keep mine lubed with Vaseline to make sure that it goes in/out with no problems. The o-ring could be better, but with lube, it's OK. I've been running mine since new and no real problems. I looked into a bronze/brass unit and the hole pattern is different, so I blew it off.
