OK, first i admit i'm stoopid on Marine GPS's
Now that thats out the way the question is---
I have a Garmin 172 GPS on my boat, all i use it for now is too read speed-- I know it has a sonar in there but i have no idea what to get to hook it up to use it??? Theres about 8 - 10 wires left over to attach to something & i do have a manual of sorts i found online but cant make heads or tails as for as useing the fishfinder/sonar part of it :( Simulator looks like it'd be a good one & instead of buying another fishfinder i's as soon buy what i need to use this one & just have one unit for GPS (I'd like to learn about it) & a good fish/depth finder
Little help please? :)

Re: Garmin 172 GPS/Sonar Question

The sonar function is not intergrated into your unit.Your unit was designed to support the now discontinued GSD 21 black box sounder. The GSD 21 was replaced with the GSD 22.

Since the 172 was discontinued sometime ago as well I'm not sure that your unit was updated to support the GSD 22 sounder module.

Re: Garmin 172 GPS/Sonar Question

You might have your 172 confused with the 178, which had SONAR built in.

No it's a 172, its like dingbat said- i did a search for that "black box" & it wud cost over $200 to make it work in a sonar mode too
Need to think on that a spell

Re: Garmin 172 GPS/Sonar Question

As JB said, the 172 requires an accessory SONAR transceiver. The 178 does not, it has the SONAR built in.

You have a 172. It cannot do SONAR without the accessory SONAR transceiver.

Perhaps you thought the 172 could do what only the 178 can do. That is the confusion I spoke of.

Understand, knew i'd have to buy something else, just did'nt know it'd have to have anouther box, transducer ect-
No big deal, think $200+ would be better spent on a good fishfinder & just use the GPS as a GPS
