Gear Oil on Suzuki - Why inject from bottom lug?

Changed the gear oil on my Suzuki DF6. The manual says to take off both top and bottom lugs to drain then inject new oil into bottom lug until it is visible from top lug hole. This is a very messy way of doing it. And then if it needs more oil top up from top lug.

Why can't I simply inject the required amount of oil into the top lug (bottom lug closed first of course)?

because of the viscosity of the oil..it'll take forever to fill, air bubbles will cause a false full. Yea,its messy, but not enough oil is worse.

If done correctly it's not that messy. After pumping oil in through the bottom hole and seeing it come out the top hole, then replace the top plug, before removing your pump fitting, then quickly replace bottom plug, and only a very small amount of clean oil will escape. It's just nice clean gear lubricant and good for your skin!

Its alot messier when you fill it from the top with the fitting. When you take the fitting off the air pressure sprays gear oil in your face. :)

Yes, the oil was very good for my skin. It mixed well with the blue marine grease. Thanks for replies. I think I see why the Tojo engineers recommend bottom filling.

Air bubbles... fill a bit, wait for teh bubbles, fill more. Doesn't work well when top down.
