Well fellas, I am happy to report that I have wife approval and a budget up to $7,000 to get the newest one I can find, though my max size is a 22 footer due to the length of my driveway. The search is officially on for a replacement for my plastic boat!

One big caution for ya while you get on the hunt:

Boats in the $2500 - $5500 range can sometimes be good, but in many cases look good on the surface only to be total junk once you dig in. Now at $7K you should be out of that junk boat range but sometimes garbage boats can slide into that higher dollar price point.

Have fun!

Thanks for the warning jas, I've shopped for used glassers as well so I am VERY cautious. :).

Good deal man, now go score a beaut!

Now I know you are trying to fund the new boat by selling the glasser. Listen man, if you can't seem to get it unloaded just let me know. I can show you how to get rid of it quick!

Hold off on that sawzall Jas! Ha! I'm going to sell the glasser in the spring, it can sleep in the garage all winter until prime selling season arrives. :)

A little negotiation and there's plenty of room to pay for a ROAD TRIP

yeah, i LIKE that one. newer hull, modern powerplant/drivetrain, i'm guessing original paint? it does sound like you might be doing some work on trailer surge brakes to get it home (or just disconnect em for trip and allow lots of following distance?)

Re: Glass owner here dreaming about a tin cuddy

I checked into this one and got some more pictures.. He bought it in 2005 from a guy in Florida who says it was only used in fresh water.. It has no hour meter and when he bought it it'd been damaged from a tree falling on it which mangled the port side rear, the top of the transom, and broke the starboard window. The repair of the port side rear is very visible, it's pretty wavy in that spot. I like his price, but not knowing how many hours are on it and knowing it had prior damage I am leary.

Any thoughts on it?

Meh, I'd put that one on the "think about it" list and keep looking eh.

Sounds like a good plan.. I've found quite a few 80s islanders that look to be in amazing condition, but they have OMC propulsion. :-(

I've wanted a Starcraft cuddy since I first saw my uncles Chieftain when I was a kid. It only took me about 40 years to finally buy one but I have no regrets.
The only downside to these boats is covering it up when its on the trailer. I may not be able to do this myself in 15 years.

Re: Glass owner here dreaming about a tin cuddy

i don't lightly disagree with the mighty Jas but i'm not as scared of that tree smitten one AS HE IS. MOST OF THESE BOATS DON'T HAVE AN HOUR METER oops, altho they're a lot less $ than you're looking at, and a compression test will tell you what you need to know about the engine internal wear, since cast iron piston rings sliding against cast iron cyl liners tend to wear a lot faster than bearings. as far as OMCs (i guess you know the term white leg o' death...), the only way i'd buy one is if i were eventually planning an OB-on-bracket conversion and the price reflected that.

Yah Bruce, the tree didn't bother me so much. It was more the tree plus the price. I'm thinking with the described damage and the window it should be a lil less is all. So, I'd keep it in mind but still continue the hunt ya know.

And yah, I do love spending another fellas $, ha! I get into way less trouble that way!

Re: Glass owner here dreaming about a tin cuddy

Thanks fellas, I told the guy it was in slightly rougher shape than i'd hoped, we'll see what he responds with.. I think if I could get it down around $5k it'd be a possibility. I also told him I don't need any of the fishing gear, this will mostly be a pleasure boat with a small amount of light fishing tossed in.

Re: Glass owner here dreaming about a tin cuddy

good plan. i think a lot of folks might be scared off by the tree incident. what i'd be more concerned about is evidence of salt water usage, with a 22' boat coming from FL....that's a little big for most of the lakes there. this should be pretty obvious when you look at boat, but it would be nice to know before you make a drive.
