Click on the link (post 18) Wood has in his signature line, the answer to all your questions about the deck glassing are there. Also if your cap was tabbed to the transom above the flotation boxes do yourself a favor and put a tab piece in before you put the cap on. If your transom plate is the width of the beam then just leave extra at the top of it to reach the cap, if not bond a loose piece to the back of the boat or under the cap. It is a PITA to see and reach up in there and hold/stick/roll the mat, most human elbows and shoulders bend in the wrong way for that work.....I learned this to late for my project.

I have the hull on a trailer with rollers should I take it off and build a cradle to hold the hull before I cut out the stringers and install the the stringers and deck or is it ok to do it on the trailer

Some guys have left it on the trailer and built the cradle. Cradle is recommended either way.

This boat was built in 1971 before the 12 Digit hin number was requiered on boats.
The boat did have a 6 digit serial number.
So I figured before I spend anymore time and money I wanted to register it and get a title in my name. I live in Massachussetts so I was expecting to have problems and to make matters worse I bought the boat from Rhode Island and you must have RI titles notarized
(the seller did have his signature notarized)
I went down to registry expecting the worst
and ....... I got it registered and the title is coming in the mail
I cant wait for the spring to continue
For now im getting all the materials i will need

I need some opinions on my outboard situation
The boat came with a 1986 90hp evinrude vro but it has a blown piston
I also got a 1980 johnson 60hp that the previous owner was going to use to repower the boat
now my question is being that its a 19' boat will the 60hp be to small
or should i look for a bigger motor or possibly get the evinrude rebuilt?

IMO, on a 19ft glass boat, a 60 is going to be underpowered, I suspect a 90 would be at the low end of the range as well.

+1 on JB's post. Doubt a 60hp would get you even close to plane. Doubt you would have much fun with it.

Sell all the motors you have and look for a 140 looper

I have another question
both outboards I have are shortshaft(20")
Can I use a longshaft(25") outboard
on this boat
what exactly determines the outboard shaft length

transon%20height.gif

Note the transom is measured vertically, perpendicular to the ground, not along the angle of the transom.

Short shaft motors have a 15in length

Long shaft motors have a 20in length

Extra long shafts are 25in

Confirm what the boats transom height is, and the actual length of the motors.

IIRC, your boat could be setup for long (20in) shaft motors.

You can but it will be hanging low in the water and promote the dreaded death wobble at high speed. Rode in a few boats that the leg was to long and they will scare the crud of a sane man.

Yeah the motor being too deep at minimum would cause really poor performance.

I've been ordering my supplies over the winter and I have just a couple things left to order but I need some advice
1st: drain and drain plug (screw on type) plastic or brass what do you guys recommend. Or is there a better type of drain plug?
2nd: everyone seems to use 1708 to tab stringers but I can get a 50yd roll of 1700 for free. Would the 1700 work of should I order the 1708 and what's the difference
Thanks

I use a brass plug. As much as I screw the plug in and out, I would be afraid of wearing out the plastic threads quickly. I keep an extra brass plug in my truck and one in the boat toolbox, just in case.

1700 is two layers of biaxial mat stitched at a 45 degree angle. If your using epoxy, this would be fine I think. Poly needs the CSM on the bottom layer for proper adherence, and layers between the mat. That's the beauty in 1708, the CSM is already stitched to it giving you the bonding strength you need and the mat gives you the flexibility to go around curves or corners nicely.
