You would go broke having them prined and spend all day handing them out.

Probably so.

That said, any time I see someone trying to flag my attention, I go to them and see what I can do to render assistance. Sometimes it's a tow back to shore, sometimes they're asking directions, and sometimes, I can do a quick repair and get them going again.

I think if you had stayed in the boat with the paddle going, you would have had an offer to tow right quick.

I didn't know this "international distress hand signal.. which is slowly raising and lowering your outstretched arms[ to the side]" and I have been on the water all my life--in an international harbor at that. I saw a guy doing it on the Eastern Shore and had no idea what he was trying to say. But for other reasons I checked on him; his 25' deadrise was broken down on the barrier island where I was staying. I used my 17' and towed him about 3 miles back to the landing. So I guess I made up for "ignoring" his ambiguous signal.

In the ADK's we have people cruising up on us asking if we need help even when we're just out in the middle of the lake eating sandwiches or catching some sun.
Usually locals though, not the vacationing Jerseyites...probably seen Deliverance one to many times...Sorry NJ.

I think your experience is an isolated incident.
Try it again and let us know what happens...LOL

Can`t explain the lack of response, but a suggestion for next time. Raise your engine cowling if an I/O or remove your outboard cover and tilt up your outboard. Give a more visual sign of distress.

.... dude. You know the next time my boat "konks" on me, I'm going to remember this hex you put on me, right? It's an OMC ... it doesn't need your help. :D
