Hard time starting.... then....

I have a 1981 Merc 200hp (V-6). The motor has a really hard time starting. I have to crank it over alot and choke it more than usual. When it does start she doesn't run on all cylinders write away. I have to drive it around for it to warm up then she goes like hell on all cylinders. I tried changing the spark plugs out for new ones (NGK BU8H) but still the same.

I have not yet done a compression check on it.... assuming all cylinders have all good compression I would guess its a fuel issue. Can the fuel pump be going on it maybe?

THanks in advance!

Re: Hard time starting.... then....

You either need to hire a fortune teller, or get serious about putting your motor in condition.

Start with compression. Then spark check on all cylinders, then fuel pressure and/or delivery diagnostics, etc. etc.

hope it helps

Re: Hard time starting.... then....

how much fuel pressure should their be?

When i finally get the motor started she seems to be running on 4 cylinders (wich would explain the hard starting), then 5, then the 6th kicks in.

Thats why i was thinking a bad fuel pump diaphragm maybe?
Or maybe bad coils??
