Re: Has anyone ever seen this?
Split case lower unit....hmmmmm....14hp? Even weirder. Yes, I believe this is a motor that was built with obsolete parts and molds. If this is a motor built in a foriegn country (1988-89)with obsolete parts, then it's likely that early '70's parts here, are compatable. A lot of times, what we'll do here in the states, to help out other countries, is send out the previous tooling and parts, for various things. You could just about name it, but it was common in anyhting to do with cars, outboards, or anything else with a spark plug.
One of the finest examples, is Johnson and Gale Products. Most Gales were built with leftover parts and obsolete tooling, from Johnson motors. This is an example of what has gone on in our borders.
Well, other countries will buy obsolete tooling and parts, to produce their lines of motors. It's a pretty old practice. Australia purchased obsolete stamping dies from us, to build cars. South America bought the tooling to build the VW Beetles. Canada built their own rendition of the Ford Falcon in the 1960's and called it the "Frontenac"
The bottom line is: Third world countries get to buy our obsolete and discontinued sh*t. There will be slight differences, from our own, but seeing this is quite interesting. If you buy a JDM engine for a 1991 Geo Metro, you might find a carburator attached to the manifold. Here in the states, none have ever been sold with a carburator, but overseas they did. In this case though, the countries that used the engine, had their own designs for carburation, which met their air quality standards, which may not be like ours.
So, if you look at buying parts for this motor, don't be surprised if the parts match up with stuff here, ten years prior, like the early '70's. The 15 and 9.9 came out here, about 1973 or 74. After a few years in production, they made some changes. Well, Johny/Rude likely sold the rights to the previous parts to third world countries out there.
