You have to pull the tilt motor to get at the coupling. Good luck as some boats can be a B***H to get at the motor. Been there.

The two bolts that hold the motor on are also what hold the motor together. So handle it carefully. I've seen the end of the motor shaft brake also.

Welcome to iboats.

Thats exactly what happened to mine. Hold off on buying the hammer blow coupler if possible. Yours could be just fine

Still, it has to come apart and you can examine the end of the drive motor and the forked end of the sector shaft as well as the hammer blow coupler. Often times these components fail because people hit the toggle and let the drive slam down or up. You should always bump the toggle when you sense your are near the end of the outdrive travel.

Get down on your belly. The tilt motor is located at the left side of the front side of the intermediate housing (in the bilge), down below the rear mount foot. Take heed to what Wrench 3 said. The two long bolts that hold the motor to the intermediate also hold both end plates on the motor. You want to be careful when you pull the motor up and out that you keep all the pieces together. It really is a stupid design but they rectified that in 1978.

If you have a Comoro, it's best to remove the engine cover and the seat to the port side / right (as you're facing the stern from inside). The tilt motor will be way back at the transom, down low just like Boom said at the base of the intermediate housing.

The '76 should still be electric shift, so you can follow your shift cables and they'll pass through the intermediate just next to your tilt motor. I've got the 165 (inline 6) and the tilt motor is right behind the motor mount in this photo.

The Nantuckets had a big bench across the back ... and I'm not sure how best to access that area. If you can get the whole thing out, it might be the best for ya'.

As said ... it's a bellycrawl job.

I worked on one with a bench seat. Had to get in there on my back with my knees up over the front support for the bench, then twist my torso to reach the motor.
It was a real challenge to get myself back out.
